Charli XCX - Charli (album 3)

For what was probably a leftover farmed off to a tv soundtrack this is excellent:



I'd take it over singles one and two from the album anyway.
 
charli is really fucking great, her whole career trajectory has been so wonderfully singular. i hope this album does well though i have more enjoyed the new stuff rather than love it. apart from 1999 which i think is just tremendous. looking at her chart record, i can't believe she's had a paltry two top 10 singles (as a lead artist) in the face of boom clap and doing it.

ps i was also thinking what a great vocalist sky ferreira is yesterday. she's brilliant on the new one.
 
It's really lovely and, as the title suggests, trés warm

 
I'm not super sold on it yet. The solo songs all seem bland on first impression. Click is good. Gone and Cross You Out head and shoulders above the rest. Hmm.
 
I need to score this at lunchtime but I also need to collect my Stereolab LPs after work. And I'm in the office tomorrow. Jeez, being an adult sucks when pop music is amazing...
 
PS - if anyone finds out before 12.30 if the vinyl comes with a download code, please holler.

Does he still get good viewing figures? I'm still aghast and agape (and even AGOG) that it wasn't a hit. It's IMMENSE.
 
It's not super radio friendly (especially with the final minute going bonkers) and they're both more or less chart poison so were you really surprised? :D

I think he gets about 2-2.5m, right? So it's worthwhile promo. I have no idea how the album will chart but anything above #8 with 6k+ would be a win.
 
Got it. Clear vinyl, 45rpm. No download code, the scalping bitch. Saw that coming from the package deal with the CD on her website but the postage on that was silly.
 
She's so overrated by the gays that she herself thinks she's the 'savior' of pop now (I mean look at the album cover) but I'll give this a listen.
 
There's a sticker on the album saying "The Best Album You'll Ever Hear" which would annoy me from anyone else, except perhaps Nurse With Wound.

God True Romance really was an incredible debut. I miss that side of her. I think a lot of it sounds more "future" than a fair bit of her music now, despite her intentions.

GROAN. Did she put it there herself?

Anyway, "Next Level Charli" was so obnoxious I wanted to stop right there but managed to get through most of it anyway. Highlight was the more interesting sounding "Shake It" and the only one I want to go back to. "Gone" is also fine and I like the production on "Cross You Out" but most of the album is indeed quite bland as Jark said and didn't manage to leave much of an impression. "True Romance" stays unbothered as her best album.
 
You tone-deaf saps. "Click" is fucking wild, "White Mercedes" is gorgeous....what do you actually want??

Side 4 is bonkers! Shake It sounds like one of those weird-ass things you stumble over on Bandcamp when tag surfing and think "WTF?" and here it is on a major label album!
 
I'm just hearing 2099 for the first time - this is a single with a video and everything, the sort-of follow-up to the uber-pop of 1999?? It's utterly peculiar but gut-achingly sad as well. Fuck me. This is...quite something.

Midweek #10. I haven't seen a sales figure, but #11 was on 2,306.
 
Sucker only opened with 5.5k and that had actual hits :D

Down to #12 today. I see Sucker opened at #15 with those sales. Looks like there's a good chance she'll debut at a very similar position with sales not massively lower. Considering the year on year decline in album sales since then and the lack of hits I suppose it's not a bad result.
 
i still can't believe 1999 wasn't the biggest hit ever.

i'm totally out of touch with what is popular with the kids these days. i always think people like charli, tove and grimes are much bigger than they actually are.
 
Top 20 isn't terrible, but if only she had included signed poppers with every album...
 
I'm staggered.

We need a genre for all this amazing pop that doesn't sell but has rabid live audiences.

#14 with 4.2k sold. A dreadful result honestly :( I hope she won't be too disheartened.
 
#13 sales, #30 streaming. Not that there's any consolation knowing that.
 
#5 on vinyl. But then, Gruff from Super Furry Animals is #6 and the Stereolab reissues are at #9, #10 and #13.
 
This album gets stronger every time I listen to it - "Official" is heartache in a bottle.

Still can't really make sense of "Shake It" but I'm OK with that - it's still bloody good fun.
