yes, chairlift woman. i can't quite decide if i love or hate this which is usually a good thing.

i quite like it. she always treads a thin line for me vocally - i found ocean of tears kinda grating - here she's a bit more shrill than i'd like as well but it works well and the song itself is really great.
 
Yes I dig it - she certainly knows her way around a hook - and was glad to see she finally announced a date for the album (a week after the new VÉRITÉ - Jark have you been following the other singles outside "Gone"?).

As am said her voice can be problematic but it also adds a certain edge to her music.

I think my favourite thing about her is when she stopped an interview for five minutes when asked how many people had been in love with her (ghastly question) in order to whip out her phone and add them all up exactly! Her OCD is relatable.

So Hot... is excellent. It really reminds me of something, I want to say HAIM but not sure it is them.

I'll give the album a go. Hopefully the vocal experimentation (which seems to be going further than in Chairlift) won't be too much. Parachute in particular was not for me.

it's wonderful. i'm so happy contemporary dance is having such a big moment in (pop) music.
 
I really like her movements, but I think it could have been shot a bit better.

In other news, this has probably entered my top dozen of the year.
The song is about being painfully far away from someone you're crazy about but still trying to keep your cool, which as everyone knows is a private kind of hell. I was thinking about the watercolor scenes in Ren and Stimpy where they'd depict the inside of their minds, and also the sequence in Disney's Little Mermaid when Ariel's voice gets pulled out of her...it's all so psychological. But the thing about personal hell is there's a lot of time to kill and there'd better be a dance routine...so I played with the shapes from American line dancing and Scottish folk dance - they both have lots of kicking and stomping and hands on hips.

it is absolutely definitely not a drag though and she's responding strictly for educational purposes, even though there "is no wrong interpretation". so there.
 
this song is absolute ecstasy.



her voice is really something. like Am says, it's always on the very edge of something difficult to listen to... but she has this really cool level of control that just keeps everything in this very calming territory. Show U Off is the best example.
 
Ugh...can see a few people stanning this...where can I best hear some of it without having to pay £12 for a listenable download?
 
It must be so weird having PLODDED along in a band like Chairlift for years, then suddenly having the internet seemingly go mad for your debut album as they currently are :D

I’m not 100% sold yet, but it’s clearly very good and I’m quite happy to take a few listens losing myself in a bit of female alt-pop. In so many ways this is the album Marina SHOULD have made instead of whatever that disaster of a double album was.

So great to see ‘So Hot...’ sneaking on the Radio One playlist too, particularly with a Caroline being in her thirties. I’m definitely not against her scoring a surprise semi-hit :D
 
The vinyl for this is absolutely BEAUTIFUL too, if only available in the USA without ridiculous postage at the moment.

Her recent London gig was in a 200 capacity venue (she could have easily sold out a 1000+. venue), and she barely has a proper website. I can’t help but think they may have been a little unprepared for how well received this album has been :D
 
I haven't got to listening to the album yet but So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings remains tremendous and Look At Me Now is really nice if a little Imogen Heap come a Dawson's Creek soundtrack.

I see it is up for pre-order on Rough Trade on LP and CD in JANUARY.
 
this song is pure honey. I absolutely demand more love for it, I mean we're really talking best of year material here.



c-listed at Radio 1 somehow and doing very nicely on Spotify.

the bridge ("I get a little bit lonely") and the big dramatic gasp for air going into it is absolutely sublime.

Also, I don't see the name of a record label anywhere...is this entirely self-released?
 
Good grief, "Insomnia". What a voice. Thrilling.

This feels like the album "Love And Fear" could have been if Marina hadn't swallowed a bunch of self-help gloop.
 
Well, this went straight back on as soon as it finished. Fabulous.
 
I barely buy music anymore. But the vinyl for this is out in a couple of weeks, and I’m definitely tempted to throw some money her way.

The shrink-wrap on some of the card sleeves these days is a right pain to try and get off without creasing the packaging.

Perpetual Novice is a rather better own label name than Lil Lou Records.
