Really good. Recognisably them but they've definitely moved their sound on. The album does have to to meet high expectations though.

very hopeful for the album now. i miss a time when they could've actually had some success with these songs.
 
Oh I do like Who very much. It would fit in with the more downtempo moments on the first album.
 
I like Who but don't love it and think almost all of the first album's emotional moments are bigger and better. Still very much into Number One Fan.
 
I found the first album but patchy but the highlights were spectacular. Quite liking the new songs I've heard so far but it's nothing mind-blowing.

Their album covers are, by the way, quite horrible.
 
Just noticed that there doesn't seem to be any CD release for the album. I know it might be old fashioned but when they are releasing on vinyl (and are on a major label) this can't help but put a bit of a damper on the album for me.
 
stayaway has finally hit me. it's such a well written song and the video makes it even better. proper excited for the album now. whoop!
 
the third verse is really something. absolutely fantastic. am i wrong in thinking their sound is not american at all? it has a very british sensibility to me.

it's basically The Japanese House meets half the singer songwriter songs on any given NOW! compilation from 96-99 :disco:
 
only halfway through but this album is already everything. so very muna up.
 
This album clearly needs some time to digest and 2 plays is not quite enough to declare it the kind of seminal work of art (pop) that pops up once in a generation, so for now here's a loon rate with in-depth analysis to follow

Never is fucking huge and very Robyn circa 05-10 with slightly more now production. Good News is late 90s singer-songwriter-goes-bubblegum-pop HEAVEN
 
I'm still absorbing the album, but agree that it is very good indeed. Never and Pink Light standing out so far. Ya-Ya Song was a slightly WTF moment initially, sounding a bit Hanson musically, and it does provide a bit of a break to the emotional intensity. It's Gonna Be Okay, Baby is quite the closer (some of those lyrics)...

I don't think there is anything here that gives me the euphoric pop feels of I Know a Place, but that was a bit of a one off. Suspect the album may turn out to be even better than the debut though.

other than the towering highs of Stayaway, Never and It's Gonna Be Okay, Baby, I don't think this album (impressive/consistent as it is) matches the debut.

but that said, I am fairly obsessed with Navy Blue atm - what a gorgeous song

This album is quite enjoyable, if the lyrics at times somewhat overshadow the other aspects of their songs (not the worst problem to have really), and actually make me uncomfortable to listen to. Can't remember the last time that happened with a (non-French) pop album.

It is really good. The bridge of the song has always been fantastic but they get more warmth from the chorus than I thought was there.
 
I'm so utterly obsessed with their take on Motivation - it's the only "live" rendition of a song that's made into my 2019 playlist on Spotify.

The "falling into the bed, why would we ever do something instead of" line is delivered with such emotion I actually find it quite overwhelming :D Katie's voice is everything.

As for the album, it's not as enduring as the debut but a handful of songs are up there with their best. Stayaway and Navy Blue in particular.
 
One of the BEST gigs I’ve EVER witnessed tonight.

The most insane setlist, they were utterly iconic.

I still haven't given the debut a proper go but I adore this
 
the debut is a better album overall. it's emotionally heavier and it sounds like a greatest hits. Loudspeaker still DESTROYS EVERYTHING ELSE EVER :disco:

saves the world is really good too though.
 
what they've done to the chorus is sublime :disco: the rest is a bit tropibop 2k16
 
I have discovered these recently and they're great. They've filled a HAIM shaped hole the way HAIM's last album didn't really do so I'm happy to keep discovering them. :disco:

I had the first album on in the background at work yesterday but it was on shuffle accidentally. I liked what I heard regardless. And the more recent one i listened to a few weeks ago and need to get to know better, but I liked it a lot.

Nihilist is great. especially for a soundtrack single. I would be quite happy with that as the sonic template for the next record. lovely lyrics too.
