I can't think of a subject matter less interesting to me than racecar driving, but here we are.



The first hour was deathly dull, with straight white men talking endlessly about car stuff. Once it got to the racing I enjoyed it more, even if it was a bit like watching your stoner mate play a video game.

I'm not sure where the Oscar buzz for this is supposed to land. I guess Christian Bale was alright, although he seemed to be doing the majority of his acting with his chin.

A solid and unremarkable meh.

This was camp for boring straights, complete with shots of the villain muttering under his breath. There was no subtlety in the script and everything was so over the top.

I enjoyed it very much actually, but then I love a good sports’ film and the story was epic.

Also the first film I have ever done in a 4D cinema, which really added to the fun and would love to do again.

I don’t care about cars either, but it’s an entertaining human story acted and directed well. You can make a film about any subject and if the characters are good it doesn’t matter. It’s a bit like watching documentaries - I don’t want or need to see one about a subject with which I’m really familiar because I’ll just be picking it apart with omissions and inconsistencies, whereas if it’s something completely new then I feel I can trust the filmmakers to teach me something.

My only issue was that for a lengthy human story it doesn’t in any way pass the Bechdel test. In fact there was only ONE named female character at all.

As far as car movies go, Rush was a much stronger movie for a subject I don’t care about.

I don’t agree with inserting women into roles for no reason, though. Where were the women supposed to actually go in a film about 1960s motor racing?

True, which is why I still loved the film. It was just a tad odd looking at the entire female cast list being just “Mrs Henry Ford”, Secretary, Autograph Seeker and Flower Girl. Did Ford’s wife not even have a name? Can you imagine a female lead cast crediting a spouse who has spoken dialogue just as “X’s Husband”?

I didn’t spot that and yes, I agree with that much. Nonsense.

Strong on performance from Bale and Damon but lacked action. Still, an interesting story if about 20 minutes longer than it needed to be.
