Do you still listen to music by cancelled artists?

I did delete all my MJ earlier this year but then he came up on my Spotify a few weeks ago and I couldn't resist, (I think it was Scream which makes it all the odder).

I still guiltily play The Smiths. R Kelly can do one though. Although I do crave a bit of Ignition.
 
I would still actively listen to MJ and R Kelly if I’m in the mood for their music.
 
I guess this also applies to all media. Not watching all the Harvey Weinstein movies is just a bit self spiteful.

After watching the doc I can't really see him without remembering how he rimmed at 8 year old.

That he's not fully cancelled really is a huge hypocrisy. You can't just pick and choose who's a gross sex criminal because of talent. MJ does make that very hard however.
 
Thankfully I dont rate Morrissey as a solo artist (shock!) So that's been easy.
 
Smiths and Morrissey still for me. There's way too much of his solo stuff that I love. Mostly earlier, of course.

I'm fine with the Smiths. It's not Johnny Marr's fault. He thought Morrissey was a cunt before it was cool.
 
Obviously I don't play Madonna since that plate of carrots. Which is far worse than H from Steps baby rape. Mega lolz indeed.

Yes, I have. I mean I haven't thrown away their CDs or anything, but I've not listened to them or streamed them.
 
Michael Jackson's stuff is just too iconic for me to not play. Also he's dead and it's not like the royalties are going to NAMBLA.

That said, I do also listen to The Smiths and Morrissey a fair bit. Fortunately the fact that he's been unlistenably shit since about 2005 makes it easier not to engage with the new stuff, and I'd never see the vile old cunt live. I think that's probably the line. I'll stream the hits but not buy a concert ticket to actively cheer on a racist/rapist etc. Imperfect, but then so is everything.
 
I'm not listening to old Bucks Fizz stuff by choice, but if it pops up on a playlist or something I wouldn't skip it.
 
Hang on though, New Beginning is fine because Jay isn't on that :o
 
Was Jay a songwriter on any of their big hits? If not, the likelihood is she won't get any royalties from your streams anyway.

I haven't listened to The Smiths for a while but I'm sure I will when the mood takes me - there's also some fun to be had in the early portion of Mozzer's solo work. what's done is done and cannot be undone but he's not getting another penny off of me.
Other than that, I've seen Twitter attempt to "cancel" Radiohead, Stereolab, XTC and Nick Cave and I don't give a fuck because the reasons were bullshit.
 
Considering Morrissey will make approximately 0.00008p in 2 years time if I stream the whole of Viva Hate this evening, I don't really feel too bad about continuing to listen to his music.

In general I think it's strange that we hold artists to a higher standard than we do pretty much anything else we consume. Why are we so quick to boycott everything Scarlett Johansson is in just because she thinks she'd make a great Nelson Mandela even though the people pulling the strings behind all these industries are killing the planet, raping women and noncing kids?

I'm not going to save the world by not listening to the Remix to Ignition on Youtube, while throwing money at Facebook/Disney/Coca Cola/The Chinese government.

Also, would Sinead O'Connor fit into this category? Wasn't she 'cancelled' back at the time?
 
Do you mean the ripping up the photo of the Pope? I imagine as many applauded her as condemned her for that.

She was never going to have a huge career in the US anyway, or at least not to the extent that I Do Not Want What I Have Not Got suggested.

I'd compare her more with the Dixie Chicks or George Michael rather than the acts Ag is referring to.

Yes. He is (was) too good not to listen to. And his list of crimes, beyond being a MAGA hat-wearing Trump supporter (which smacks of trolling anyway) is minimal for a "cancelled" artiste.

Anti-islamic as anti Islam the religion or Muslims as a group of people? The whole show biz and music industry is usually anti religions, why is it only accepted when it’s anti Christianity?

Well, he's a member of For Britain, which advocates reducing Muslim birthrates, supports a ban on immigration from Pakistan and Somalia among others, and whose membership also includes a renowned Swedish Holocaust denier, so I'd say he's just a straight up nasty fucking racist rather than any kind of ideological anti-religious thinker.
