As incredible as Marie was at the big ballads, the uptempo tracks where she came bursting in after Per's verse could be just as good.
 
Their singles up to Crash! Boom! Bang! are untouchable for me. In fact add June Afternoon to it, silly as it is. After 'Have A Nice Day' they still crank out the occasional banger but it's a bit more hit and miss. Still 7/8 out of 10 moments mind you.
 
I think I might be the only person anywhere that ranks Fireworks as one of their best. Given its omission from every Greatest Hits, I have to assume that even they didn't like it.
 
God I've gone onto a YouTube rabbit hole of their songs and just seeing her in those FRANKLY IMPOSSIBLE tight dresses and her cropped mohawk (so AVANT GARDE) belting out these bangers with her beautiful voice is making me weep HARD :(

The comments in every undecipherable language under the sun mourning her passing are beautiful to see and confirm them as the ULTIMATE BIG IN JAPAN Western band. ICONES.

it's a nice enough song but for some reason it's when i stopped really paying proper attention. listening to it now. there have their charm, i think a lot of it has to do with her likeability and talent as a singer/musician (not really sure how much each did, i'm guessing per did more/most).

also, i like to think of them as a lighter, swedish version of eurythmics but that's mostly due to the short haired vocalists than the music.

I seem to remember they didn't have complete control over what went on the Greatest Hits - also bear in mind that the thing is loaded to the max with four new tracks as well as the hits. If you read the liner notes they completely TRASH 'Almost Unreal' yet it's still there because it was a hit.

listening to this one now. a lot of them i feel like i still know by heart word and vocal curve. they're very cheesy yet earnest and somehow feel honest. she has conviction in her delivery.

now i have to find out if she wrote those coffee table lyrics.

It isn't on any of the Greatest Hits and I think it's the only single missing from the Rox Box.

I quite like the chorus to Almost Unreal, although the verses are really weak. The video is weird as fuck, but I assume that's mostly because of the the Super Mario film bits.

They may have been CHEESY but they were TWO OF A KIND. You hear five seconds of their songs and they're INSTANTLY ROXETTE. Real music fans can go do one, Beyoncé would kill to have such consistent OUVRE.

He did the majority of the writing, especially in the early days.

But yes, it was her voice that made them. The sometimes odd lyrics didn’t matter when they were sung by her. Her voice was so full of emotion...
 
there's definitely some shania twain fuckery going on in songs like joyride and dressed for success.

i really feel rather weird stanning so hard for roxette but they were a big part of my start with music.

I know right? They did the same (to a lesser extent) with Dangerous, which is ridiculous (their thoughts, not the song).

Same! I had Look Sharp in cassette, and I played it on and on. I still remember the sticker "including The Look and Chances", which is odd because I never heard Chances being a single or being played anywhere at all.
 
I'm glad Spending My Time has ended up doing so well as that's the song Per felt where the US record company gave up on them.

As far as Marie co-writes go, it surprises me Cry wasn't a single (although I'm sure it was used in an advertisement campaign). It sounds like a standard. Equally atypical were her very own Watercolours In The Rain (which was supposedly her favourite Roxette song) and the beautiful Little Girl.
 
The only explanation I find for that is that Spending my time was released in late 91, exactly when Billboard changed their methodology to compile the Hot 100, singles started to stay in the charts a lot longer (playlists made up by radio stations didn't count anymore), so it was harder to climb into the top 10. Spending my time charted but it was their first single to miss the top 20 in a more static chart, and same for their follow up, Church of your heart. So I guess those bloody Americans decided it was over for them.

i'm strangely partial to the ones where per sings.
the that was then/this is now/i try to get/over you bit does it for me.

come back before you leave is the other example. she does a no toward the end that almost makes the entire song.
 
I proper love some of the songs Per sings and I love even more the ones where they do the question-answer singy bit between them like in The Look or Things. Some songs suit his grungier delivery in the verses, then she comes sweeping in with those bulletproof choruses... bliss.
 
Joyride was my first album, the Crash! Boom! Bang! Tour my first concert and they also ignited my love for Sweden.

They were a huge part of my childhood & early teens. I grew up with Look Sharp! but I'd say that Crash! Boom! Bang! is probably my favourite album of theirs.
