Always a good opportunity to dig this one out.

3rd: Tomalchevy Sisters - Shine (123pts)

Eurovision-Russia2.jpg

In keeping with Russia's habit of sending the elderly and infirm to Eurovision, this brave pair made it all the way to the finals despite the rare condition of being conjoined at the weave. :(

Russia had a very serious image problem in the mid-10s, what with all the terribly unfair scrutiny about minor whoopsies like banning homosexuality and having people poisoned. This could manifest in some quite inconvenient crowd noise come Eurovision night, and the Soviet efforts to circumvent this via a variety of means is going to make for a fascinating dissertation for whichever geopolitical gay claims it first.

If they were banking on a room full of drunk queens being too soft-hearted to hurl abuse at a pair of virginal teenagers, they sorely underestimated the mood at the time, and these poor girls received a notoriously hostile reception. It's possible the song didn't help, I know Shine has its fans but does any other entry in this collection scream 'Anthem for a Totalitarian State' quite so loudly? You can practically hear the tanks rolling across the borders while these wide-eyed patsies are on the air.

2 x 1 (Zu Klara, Alla)

So it's a fairly predictable dogfight between Sergey 1.0 and Polina. And the lead changed several times during voting...

I do think the staging for this one could have been improved. For example, instead of tying their hair together, it could have been fed into a wood chipper.

Oh I really couldn’t even with the Sisters Hymen. I think I watched about a MINUTE of it

I'm not sure what standards are kept around here that we'd actually say "no thanks, Serge, I've got Julia Bradbury's Canal Walks to catch up on" but a bit more FLUFF upstairs AND down below wouldn't go amiss

Oh I wouldn't mind either Polina (scared) or Sergey (wife and kids) winning.

Oh I thought it would just be me who liked Shine

I'm surprised this is even close, knowing Moopy, it will be a shock a Sergey victory. Of course I'm here for this :disco:

A Million Voices is another one that I liked much less than I'd remembered on re-listening. Surely it has to be Sergey.

I assume the Chomelsku Sisters finished 3rd due to general agreement it's okay but not exactly slot-winning hence the zero 12s.

It's a decent song and that's all there is to it. The booing arguably added drama to the performance

I love 'Shine' in studio form; the live version really wasn't great though.

The previous two hours were essential to fully appreciate the drama of this reveal. I'm going to have to ask that you come back at eleven.

Will people who aren't VoR please stop bumping this post? It's getting my hopes up too much.

I was singing I don't wanna put in, I hope it has nothing to do with @VoR being killed (again).

2nd: Polina Gagarina - A Million Voices (216pts)

Sorry Polina, you've been pipped at the post again. Still, I'm sure you'll take it in stride and not have a full-blown weeping fit or anything. :(

I'd argue that both of the top two in this round represent the peak of their respective genres, and you don't get modern Euroballads much better than this one. Polina seemingly becoming fully unhinged over the course of the finals performance only adds to the appeal. If she'd ended it by dramatically blowing her brains out on camera, it wouldn't have been entirely unexpected.

Sweden vs Russia was certainly a riveting clash of the titans that year, for which we can thank the juries, given the televotes inexplicably favoured ITALY :zombie:. It's probably better in the long run that Måns had his moment, but this would have been a very worthy victor in its own right.

1st: Sergey Lazarev - You Are The Only One (236pts)

Of course, if Polina HAD triumphed, we likely never would have gotten THIS, so three cheers to her crushed dreams and mental unravelling. :disco:

This is really the kind of mega-budget Euro-nonsense that only Russia is really capable of serving these days, which makes it all the more annoying when they waste time on trolling their neighbours. If Eurovision could be won by force of will alone, this would've been a Euphoria-style runaway. Alas, you threaten to invade a few trifling neighbour states and suddenly those pesky jurors have a bee in their bonnet about 'democracy' and 'rule of international law'. Peasants.

In a way, the fact that both of these entries were cruelly denied feels right, not politically but in terms of hopefully spurring them on to ever more ludicrous heights. May Russia continue to serve as Eurovision's increasingly desperate bridesmaid until they finally snap and gun down the whole damn congregation.
