spike in cases in italy from what i see. how? isn't everything closed down? i hope their infrastructure can handle it.

I've been into at least half a dozen supermarkets over the last fortnight and NONE of them look like they've restocked in that time. And it not just hygiene products - it's everything. No wonder people are hoarding.

I have a flight at a commercial airport for a four day vacation in a few hours, am I OVERREACTING by not going? (within the US- but still we have it HERE TOO)
 
I think Kylie's nursery will close soon. Dannii is due to start in 2 weeks time, which means I'll be losing £150 a day :gross:

I don't think it would stop me. Well, unless you're planning on self isolating rather than going about business as usual, perhaps.

I didn't think it would for me either. But overnight we have gotten a list of places where confirmed cases have gone and unsurprisingly the airport is one of them. My other concern is not being able to fly back as planned because of things escalating these next few days and the cancelation of flights. It's a (less than) $200.00 flight, so I am erring on the side of not going.

I'm just not a fan of being told to use hand sanitizer when we know it's AIRBORNE.

Cafes and restaurants here have all ditched metal cutlery for disposable ones.

School volunteers have all been BANNED from schools citywide.

Hand sanitizer are sold out every fucking where.

Like I get it, but this feels ridiculous
 
Is anyone else struggling with this mentally? I keep thinking about my dad and bursting into tears as my imagination runs wild. I’m trying to stay focused at work but the government’s response yesterday really threw me for how apparent it was that they just don’t care and/or don’t understand. We just had an emergency staff meeting to discuss our options and mostly it was about how we can get the children to keep washing their hands and following good hygiene practice, but it’s just so hard and now we can’t buy antibacterial gel for the school because it’s run out nationwide.
 
I’m ok but the general sense of hysteria around me is making me anxious. People looked wild at the supermarket yesterday.

Is there any talk of closing the school or is that dictated by the government?
 
trump's behaviour is absolutely detestable. he was in a room with multiple people who have/are suspected to have the virus and he still claims not to have been tested. it'd be bad if he wasn't lying.
 
I know what you mean though, I'm glad Granny Star (RIP) is no longer around to have to worry about this.

It’s all dictated by the government so we were expecting yesterday’s cobra meeting to have a different outcome. If they think that schools will close eventually, why not just do it now?

i think the main problem is avoiding a panic. people need to be informed and be cautious but at the same time you shouldn't be buying into the hysteria and contributing to it by buying a year's worth of toilet paper.

it seemed to just be one night of hoarding here (for now). all shelves were full when I went in this morning. most supermarkets had apparently already stocked up due to Easter. medals of honour to everyone who thunk ahead!

if the aftermath will be anything like after the crisis in 08 where banks got big bottomless candy bags and their henchmen got away I want the French to wheel out and polish the GUILLOTINES
 
It's a matter of time schools and even bars are closing over there like here, it's the only way to try to stop this.

that sounds awful. the death count is such an abstract thing until it happens to someone around you. i think that's why we're seeing a bit of a shift in the way even trump is addressing it - both in terms of urgency and in terms of messaging (i dread what the right will turn this into).

So I'm (supposed) to be off to London tomorrow. Is being in a confined space for c. 4.5 hours with strangers really a good idea? Probably not. Hoping everyone else is put off from travelling. :D

Yes. My parents have already ISOLATED THEMSELVES and my mother is already really DEPRESSED. She can't go out much in bad weather and was really looking forward to spring; they were supposed to be going on a cruise to the Canaries next month. Plus my gran died of a respiratory illness just a few months ago. I dread to think what she'll be like after SIX MONTHS

The current position in my department is 'it's optional if it sets your mind at rest'. But most people on my team work from home 2 out of 5 days per week anyway. I very much doubt the option has been passed down to the massive amount of call centre and admin staff who presumably don't have remote working set up.

My mother is refusing to isolate herself. And still planning on attending her great grand daughter's birthday party at a soft play centre on Monday.

seat reservations are mandatory here now so they can ensure passengers sit safely apart. then again practically everyone is staying indoors anyway
 
the strange thing is i'm less afraid of getting the virus than watching how helpless we are and how inadequate our systems and leadership have become?

is there a global organisation/effort to combat this? apart from who (who let the dogs out and whose gensec is a fast and charismatic dude you want to listen to for hours).
