Lots of then are not able to train at all, I think there's little doubt the Olympics won't happen this summer.

Go crazy with the vegan stuff but i’d urge people to leave the gluten free stuff where possible. My flatmate and her girlfriend (who is coeliac) are self-isolating in my flat at the moment and couldn’t find fucking anything that she is able to eat in local supermarkets.

No where is this trend more pronounced than in Italy. Men make up nearly 60% of people with confirmed cases of the virus and more than 70% of those who have died from covid-19, according to the country's main public health research agency.

On the other end of the spectrum is South Korea, where about 61% of confirmed infections have been in women. Though far fewer patients have died, the majority of fatalities - 54% -- were again in men.

I managed to avoid all coronavirus news yesterday because I was at work for 11 hours sorting out our complete new rota and way of working. But now reading everything that's happening, I'm frightened.

I'm not worried about getting c19, I'm just of the opinion we will all get it at some point, but there's no way the UK is ready. I feel like the healthy people need to get it now and recover and keep all the vulnerable people in isolation, then give the NHS time to prepare for the mass outbreak.

Mandy's job is at risk, and we are looking at any way we can to keep staff in jobs but it's not looking good. The ones kicking off at work about having to pick up an extra shift or two will be the first ones gone if needed.
 
Well, I’m in work... customers are still coming in, and we’re still having weekly appointments with them over the phone to check their work search activity. It’s like we’re on a different fucking planet.

Apparently a bunch of our staff who have been off “self isolating” have been caught out going to the pub etc. so surely they can still work?

I know the seriousness of it all and understand the vulnerable people with underlying conditions being off, but it seems every parent has just fucked off for two weeks because little Timmy has a runny nose, and them and their families aren’t actually isolated apart from not coming to work. Since it’s now confirmed that it’s on full pay, more have gone off.
 
After hanging on for what seemed like no good reason, we're finally being told that Saturday is the last day of trading for all our stores. Guessing the case for many others too. Banks are all reducing hours/closing. Today is my day off which feels bizarre and irrelevant now - I'll end up on the phone all day anyway due to mass confusion and questions I have no answers to. After that, I may be redeployed into other services. God only knows how long that will take to arrange, but surely we'll all be drafted in somewhere (hint: I work for a humanitarian organization so it's inevitable)

Two days ago everyone with asthma or COPD (and whatever else on that list) had to be sent home which meant instant closure in 50% of cases. Most of this has been met with utter disbelief and reluctance - "I feel fine, I want to work, PLEASE?!" Well, no, sorry :( The amount of people this exposes with "underlying health conditions" is crazy.

I have a staff member who initially BEGGED me not say anything because being at home makes him depressed and even suicidal. It's fucking shit and miserable and I feel for the guy but no way am I having that hanging over my head. I mean he'll be off from next week anyway so he'll have to go through it regardless :( All I can do is check in with people as the weeks progress.

I even suggested, without thinking, meeting for a coffee in a couple of weeks until the penny dropped.

This is fucking terrifying

Definite disciplinary job. I'm in self-iso with mild symptoms and I'm going fucking nowhere until they're gone. We've deffo had folk bunking off because of this too and heaven help them if they actually become symptomatic.

I wondered this myself due to a staff member SCREAMING at me that she didn't want to see her assistant manager, who had been asked to self isolate earlier in the week, out with her friends etc.

I mean, even if that happens, our company policy is "they can't return to work", so not sure how you even tackle it. Some form of disciplinary for breaching health advice maybe, but good luck with that when there's literally NO ONE AROUND TO DO IT :D
 
Also people just aren't getting it are they? Most people wandering the streets are over 70. They're asking if we think the shops will be business as normal come Monday. Utterly blind to the total shutdown going on around them..

I can't even begin to imagine how the majority of society is going to cope with this.

You know that initial feeling of human nature 'excitement' because something wacky is happening that goes against the daily grind, even if it's not a positive excitement? That's vanished. It's just fear and anxiety now.

I live on a little bit of a village type high street, the only people I see chatting in close contact are older people. The cafe was full of them yesterday.

there really needs to be a sweeping reassessment of our social, political and economic structures. it feels like it's all cracking after just a couple of weeks.

healthcare and the stock market seem like good places to start. billionaires, internet providers and media giants to follow.

that utter cringe celebrity version of imagine has got me gunning for the inorbitant amounts some people in entertainment and sports are getting paid too but i'll hold off there for now.
 
Well I got to the massive M&S foodhall by the station this morning at 8:20 and they said from next week 8-9am will be elderly and vulnerable only but they would let us in now as it wasn’t busy.

I got in and there were no elderly around at all, and all shelves fully stocked with lovely food. Managed to actually get bread.

Oh no I don't mean for good (well...as society currently stands :side-eye:) just in the same way all organizations are. For the "foreseeable". We're lucky in that we will get paid so in that sense it's fine, but it feels miserable nonetheless. Not to be clichéd but it's so much more than a job for most of our teams, some of them put their whole life into it and have built up something wonderful so to see it all snatched away is just :(

This will be the positive that comes out of all this, so much of the system we survive in is fucked, and this is exposing the cracks. Capitalism is dead because of a flu bug.

With the homeless, at least it's getting warmer now (not a joke by the way, it IS getting warmer which is something less negative if this drags on)
 
What about hairdressers and barbers? Will we all be a combination of Jesus lookalikes and skinheads?
 
Going for a 10 minute sprint-run does wonders to alleviate panic/worry/self destruction.

I hope if the inevitable happens there's still some freedom with this but maybe not...
 
I've just volunteered my services at the local allotment. I figure its mostly old people looking after them, so they are most likely to be isolated/ill. I know enough about growing veg to keep things ticking over at this critical time, and its one less thing to worry about if they are stuck indoors.

If we're talking old people I've seen far, far more women about to be fair...I would say we are equally stupid on this matter. Men will definitely act like that though.

Maybe it's more to do with women living longer and as the older ones continue to take chances and be the most vulnerable, it's inevitable the men will have a higher death rate? Dunno.
 
Its exploding in America right now. Also India is also just being hit. It's going to be huge there.

But that doesn't tie back to the story entirely. The death rate is higher than the infection rate for men in all the quoted countries, meaning that men are disproportionally more likely to die.

Places like Italy have been mostly testing people who go to hospital. Which if it affects men more, then it will appear that more men get infected whether that's true or not.

South Korea, with more widespread testing, has seen a higher infection rate in women.

In short, nobody has the correct conclusion, so it is impossible to come to generalisations about why those conclusions are occurring.
 
I just got my haircut, they have been dead all week apparently, I asked him to go shorter than normal in the event that this thing goes on a while.
