This looks like it could be fun and unlike the politician it’s one season and looks to have some old school Hollywood cameos a la Feud.
 
it's by ryan murphy so i'm out.

seriously, after the politician i just don't care anymore. he's just pumping them out at this point.

I didn't bother with The Politician, it seemed too smug but this looks like excellent good fun :disco:
 
Reviews seem to be generally positive (I only read headlines) even from critics who usually don’t like Ryan Murphy.
 
Isn't there a fair bit of nudity in the first episode? I'm not a fan of pocket gays, but totally here for his arse or anything else on offer.
 
I will inevitably love this for three episodes and then hate watch the rest, as I do with all Ryan Murphy productions.

I love a bit of OLD HOLLYWOOD, and Patti LuPone is in it, so I'm sure there'll be all sorts of :disco: moments there.

I’m gonna give it a shot tomorrow, I’m holding off on a new season of Bosch until I see if I like this.
 
Oh this is just really good fun ! Just watched the first two episodes back to back.
 
I'm quite enjoying it. It's a bit CRASS in places and desperate to please, but it's satisfying fodder.
 
I’m on episode 4 now. The first 2 were very good but now some of these fictionalised versions of real people are just quite insulting. The actress portraying Vivien Leigh is utterly dreadful. Why is Rock Hudson being written as a complete moron too?

I liked the first couple of American Horror Story seasons, and also Feud. Everything else Murphy done has been awful. It’s all so unsubtle, crass and sex-obsessed(which is ultimately just boring).
 
I’m on episode 3 and I want Paget Brewster to star in the Tallulah Bankhead autobiography because she was hilarious. Not so sure about Vivienne Lee although she was bipolar and difficult apparently but the portrayal feels very broad for 2020.

I find the main straight guy to be attractive. But yes it’s all a bit crass and dialed up to a 100 (Jim Parsons :zombie:) but it’s Ryan Murphy so what do you expect.

Having listened to You Must Remember This makes this more fun cause I can actually follow the stories in the background.

Also it does seem the Jim Parsons character is a real person

His most prominent client was Rock Hudson, whom he transformed from a clumsy, naive, Chicago-born truck driver named Roy Scherer into one of Hollywood's most popular leading men. The two were teamed professionally until 1966. In 1955, Confidential magazine threatened to publish an exposé about Hudson's secret homosexual life, and Willson disclosed information about Rory Calhoun's years in prison and Tab Hunter's arrest at a gay party in 1950 in exchange for the tabloid not printing the Hudson story. At his agent's urging, Hudson married Willson's secretary Phyllis Gates in order to put the rumors to rest and maintain a macho image, but the union dissolved after three years.

I did enjoy the end of the 3rd episode where he creates the first Sean Cody video.
 
I've just finished the third episode.

I'm enjoying the visuals (Lou Eyrich always comes through with the costumes) and obviously there is a fair amount of eye candy in the cast. I can't shake the feeling the show would be better if it were about Patti LuPone's character though - if only because she's Patti LuPone.

The dialogue is truly terrible, and the characters are so one-dimensional they may as well be cardboard cut-outs. With the basic premise being 'classic Hollywood but WOKE' you'd think they could treat one of the greatest stars of stage and screen as something more than a hysterical nympho... Again. Poor Vivien deserves better.

I also love that we're clearly meant to boo and hiss at the blonde only getting breaks because of who her dad is, but support the actress shagging the director :D
 
I’m halfway through episode six and it’s beginning to grate on me how everyone is just so nice and supportive and speaks as if it’s 2020.

All these nice white people are putting their lives/careers on the line to make this movie, even the supposed spoiled brat was just fine with her mom casting someone else. They’re all so goddamn progressive.
 
I bingewatched the whole thing yesterday and I didn’t find it that bad.
I liked it even.
It’s very much a happy ending Hollywood standard thing, but who doesn’t want something that’s guaranteed to end well in all of the uncertainty we’re living at the moment?
 
There’s a lot to like about it but it would have been nice if it had some tension.

I gave up in the end. It's so lame. There's no conflict at all because despite being told Hollywood is institutionally racist and homophobic, every single character we meet for more than five seconds is actually totally right-on.

It feels more like a tract than an actual story, and it's a shame because there was so much going on in the era, and you could definitely tell a really interesting story about overcoming bigotry and censorship in mid century Hollywood, but it's just self congratulatory, poorly researched fluff.
 
That last episode was quite bad. I think that’s it for Ryan Murphy stuff for me.
 
Absolute trash. I liked it a lot most of the time and wanted more. The petrol pimping was certainly a new one for me.

The ending possibly didn't quite pull it off, but I did like what they tried where everyone bar the generic white male gets their moment. I felt like they could have done more here, but it's just too 4am for me to explain better.

Lupone is a fabulous, savage screen presence. She seems like such a bitter person, I can only hope Glenn Close bags herself a part for season 2.

Sorry, I loved it. The last episode was a bit too, well, Hollywood an ending (hence the name) but it was just pure fantasy from start to finish and I loved it

Patti was absolutely fucking superb in it, though. I always presumed she was just an overentitled cunt, but god she stole the show. Her and the woman who played Ellen GAVE ME LIFE!
 
I’m also amazed people are bemoaning the lack of realism. It was a FANTASY! That was the POINT! I mean, homosexuality was illegal until the 60s anyway. It was all a big “what if”.
 
But it’s an empty fantasy, what if racism and homophobia were resolved because 4 people like really really wanted them to be resolved through the power of one measly movie.

It’s not even consistent, in the last episode the same people hiss and boo at Camille for daring to sit in the front row of the oscars are the same people who voted for her to win best actress (something that didn’t happen in the real world for 60 years).
 
When did they hiss and boo her? I didn’t spot that at all! They booed the boys. Maybe I’m wrong... Even if they did, it was a part of the crowd, not the whole lot. Not everyone would have voted for her.

And yes, we know it didn’t happen in the real world for another sixty years. I repeat, THAT IS THE POINT.
 
The last episode was a bit too neatly wrapped up, but overall I loved this series.

My biggest niggle with the final episode was that when Camille managed to take her seat in the front row, Archie was already there. Did he not have the same issues that she had getting in, for being black AND gay? Were they just not shown, or was it simply that he's a man so it wasn't a problem?

But I've never been known to care much about dialogue and realism if there's enough male flesh on offer :tongueout:
