My brother's been rewatching BB 2004, and the way they talk about Nadia is an eye-opener. It's almost like her gender reassignment is some dirty little secret.

Two years later, did Grace not say something about the new housemates being 'a he-she and a wigga'? Sam being trans felt a lot more normalised in that it wasn't treated as a sensational secret, but the attitudes in the house towards her would have had half of the cast ejected these days.

Nikki was certainly the WORST in all of that, constantly asking Sam why do you have tampons/you have a cock don’t you/do you fancy me etc etc

With this REWATCH she’s starting to grow on me a bit, but the whole Sam thing is quite uncomfortable to watch and bar the diary room rants she seems quite SELFISH and SPOILED (case study: Salmon-Gate)

Whilst I don’t think any harm or ill intent was meant behind it at all, it doesn’t mean it isn’t QUITE RACIST :D

Don't start me - there are whole essays about treatment of/programming about trans people in comedy and entertainment.

To be fair, she was evicted TWICE, so a lot of people didn't like her, but I think it was the childish tantrums and bizarre turns of phrase that people liked.

Having just watched 30 Rock again, there were quite a few moments that were very jarring to see in 2020.

But the blackface was the worst. I could see what they were trying to do, but still.
 
Can anyone explain to me why that Steps video is racist? :confused: I just watched it and it's not like they are having a laugh at the Chinese culture at all! Isn't that taking things a bit too far? Or maybe we don't have such a thin skin, blackface is ok here because nobody takes it in a racist way, for example.
 
Movies directed by Roman Polanski and Woody Allen (I still like and watch some the old ones but I can’t anything new).

Gone with the Wind (again I still appreciate the movie but I can see why it’s problematic).

I think a lot of 30 Rock deliberately cut close to the bone where race was concerned. The blackface thing is definitely shocking, but served a purpose - it helps that a lot of the cast and writing team were non-white. The only time I ever baulked at their race stuff was when Tracey said 'We all look the same to me', and even then that's a joke they'd used at the expense of white people in other seasons.
 
In reference to the Steps video - despite Lisa Scott Lee claiming to be a quarter Chinese or whatever (:D), you can’t just BORROW stereotypical elements of an ENTIRE NATION and package it up to try and sell a 3 minute pop song! It’s just not ok.

If you were to ask me how a person from China dances, my default answer would probably be the (admittedly wonderful :disco: ) 5-people-with-different-levels-of-arms choreo from the ATLIG video just because it’s BURNT into my memory as a reference as the video plays with Chinese stereotypes.

As mentioned before - I don’t think it was meant with any ill will, and was probably seen as a tribute at the time - doesn’t mean it isn’t racist. See also: Gwen Stefani’s first album, and Kelis’ Fourth Of July video where is she resplendent in a Native American headdress.

I had a terrible realisation recently while clicking my fingers to HEY MAMA WELCOME TO THE 60s that Hairspray is probably as much of a tale of white saviourism as GREEN BOOK

Also I was re-watching SMASH recently and there's a scene in the first episode where Karen says "I wish I was fat!" (can't remember the context). It was a nothingy throwaway remark but I found it pretty jarring

Oh and speaking of cultural appropriation... :D
