Quite right too, there really is nothing more LUXURIOUS than spending a few dirty coppers in the rusty, tobacco stenched arcade before popping next door to McDonalds for a cold big mac. And all the while wondering if that offshore bomb is going to send the whole island sky high, obliterating Southend in the process.

Also Leysdown at the opposite end is truly the Vegas of the UK. All the whelks and greasy slot machines one could desire

Goodness it does sound appetising! I’ve never actually been there - although I have of course heard about all the exquisite attractions - and now I’m feeling compelled to pencil in a visit. Bet there’s some lovely B&Bs and charming boutique hotels. Might make a week of it
