Vera Lynn DEAD

That's the 2nd 50s no.1 star to die in a week. Surely there's just a handful left.

Well there’s one the BBC will have had ready in the death cupboard.

I was half expecting her to pop up on word game then we could have blamed our @Ag for her untimely demise.

Poor Dame Vera. That said, how many singers work into their 100s? Good on her for that.

I guess she was Lady Gaga to some wartime queens. I hope they stanned hard.

Most of her iconic tunes actually pre-date the charts, but she does have an official #1, from 1954. I imagine it was beginning to sound rather dated even then. The song that knocked it off the top was Rosemary Clooney, practically Dirrty-era Xtina compared to matronly old Vera.

Having listened to all the 50s no.1s it wasn't out of place at all. Rosemary Clooney was certainly a breath of fresh air, but it was still a couple of years before the teen sound really hit. Mambo Italiano was considered a novelty hit.

Can someone explain to me why Queen Vera was never given a remix album?

I've NEVER read about any elderly queens idolising Vera Lynn! Actresses and opera singers were more the gay icons of the days.

I've just gone through YouTube and the We'll Meet Again remixes are dog shit.

My gay great uncles David and Derek have been lifelong Maria Callas fans. I remember my nan (David's sister) wrapping up LPs for him at Christmas.

40s queens deserved her Chromatica.

Strut it out
Walk a mile
Serve it, Air-raid in the city style

From what I've read "I like opera" was pretty much code in the 1950s for "I'm gay".

Still serving gays in nursing homes with a 2020 release :disco:

My favourite Vera Lynn reference (at 15:45):

“Just get up there Vera and sing about white cliffs before somebody smashes you into one.” :D

She did hit the charts this year didn't she?

Hard to believe she had an 80 year career with getting her tits out.

She's taken two different versions of We'll Meet Again into the chart in the last two months. One for the NHS, one for VE Day celebrations.

Capturing the zeitgeist until her dying breath :disco:
