Ellie Goulding - Brightest Blue (album 4)

Well this is proving to be a DIFFICULT listen. I think I prefer the anonymous bops after all.

Close to Me remains incredible and one of my favourite Ellie tracks. The perfect "alt popstar forced to go pop" experiment.

Clloooooose to MEEEE!

I'm on my 67th play Jark, I need you to catch up and post a rate (including EG0) and since I don't love myself I may be giving Hate Me a 9.5 because it's a vibe.

The album didn’t do anything for me after first listen. Is it a grower? Loved the last album.

Deff a grower; I listened to it like 100 times since it leaked so that kinda helps. If you're into some sort of alt-r&b cherry pick the highlights that have been mentioned. It's part BANKS, part female Weekend and part Halcyon (her best album).

Tides a really incredible dance-pop song. I'm really shocked. To be honest I love and stan this woman and never really doubted her, but the way this album appeared from nowhere to announce that she still takes it seriously and has artistry to explore is pretty exciting. I don't even love the album front to back, a couple of the ballads are a miss for me, but the things she's exploring feel like a statement of how she still has some presence on the scene and hasn't been permanently smoothed off by label politics or any of that shit.

The album is like Halycon in some ways but she sounds like a different artist now. How she uses her voice, writes the songs etc is a bit more imperfect in a singer-songwritery way, so to me this is more of a glamorous SECOND COUSIN than a sister album. The BANKS comparison is definitely astute, but I'll get more enjoyment from this more than that, which I just don't really listen to sadly

How's the album holding up for you Pips?

She's #1 in the mids, 3k ahead of Bob Dylan who got a vinyl release apparently. Hoping she holds on and enters with 15k+ - no actual sales figure available yet

first performances of Love I'm Given and New Heights

love that we're past webcam performances (for now)

Loving it more with each listen and not over it YET.

I'm loving all the promo so far, I wish she would go as hard as Katy would with a D.O.A. single and put those inflatable fish lips to good use and I'd rather she would just perform stuff from EG1 instead of combining both but, get coin sis I guess??

This one in particular made me appreciate Woman a lot more :disco:

and these visual serving performances are very good too

Only in the USA hun :(

The Close to Me performance is great. Her expression at the end... :D

Brightest Blue is sensational. I think she adds a new part in the chorus ("and now I see no beauty...") unless it's in the studio version and I forgot. I think this album has potential not to die forever within three weeks if they send the right songs to radio, get Radio 2 on board and keep finding nice ways for her to stage performances and show off her VOX

She's got signed CD, vinyl and cassette with personalised voice messages on her website. ÂŁ11.50 for the CD.

All 4 Brightest Blue cassette tapes. Each in a unique colour and housed in a recycled cardboard o-card featuring one of four alternative artworks.

ÂŁ23.50 for that, with a personalised voice message and signed card.

Is that counting as four sales for chart purposes? :D

I think in the current sales climate, where she is on week two is always going to be the tell.

That perf of Woman is lovely.

Yes, I don't think we can call the album a HIT based on one week, but a number 1 is still a number 1.

14.8k sold. Shit sales (Delirium had 38k) but different climate and considering the campaign they have to be happy.

I'm really enjoying the album. Start, Tides, Cyan (interlude), How Deep and Brightest Blue are causally brilliant.

Wait what, are personalised VOICE NOTES counting as album sales these days?! :D Ellie Goulding queen of finding new ways to scam herself a number one :D

Brightest Blue HUGE on the Cameo charts :disco:

If her second week sales dip in line with Delirium (in terms of percentage), she'll be down to about 5.5k next week. Which this week would see her at #8.

I suspect that this will drop more quickly though, particularly since she's stopped hawking her voice notes and four cassette bundles.

I found out a while ago that apparently my niece once went on a date with our Ellie G's brother, but it never went anywhere. I almost had a tenuous 'lame to fame' :(
