SYNC LISTEN - Roisin Murphy, 'Overpowered' - TONIGHT 20.30 (1 Viewer)

Checkin' On Me is a bit of a necessary breather sandwiched between heavyweights. The strings floating between that BOM, BOM-BOM refrain like curtains in the balcony breeze are just... heaven.

I don't really have words for much I love Let Me Know.

A beautiful, blissed-out slice of disco. An entire mood. A whole groove.

It even inspired that tattoo.

Everytime I walk into a greasy spoon* I have to resist the urge to recreate this ICONIC video

* Not very often naturally. Those calories - oofft! Plus I'm veggie and I can't deal with the smell of meat.

It's everything. Fuck, this album.

Movie Star is my least favourite so far. It's not a bad song, but I find the sudden SWITCH UP in energy from Let Me Know to be a tad JARRING and somehow it's also a bit lightweight. not the best single choice.

she calls it a sweet, formulaic pop song, which is true but which somehow smells like shade.

We'll make a MOVIE
And break into CINEMA

Lyrically St. Etienne.
Musically Supernature-era Goldfrapp/COADF-era Ciccone.
ATTITUDINALLY pure Queen Roisin.

MOVIE STAR

Grey's Anatomy was/is(?) the worst ever but I loved it when they used this flawless track in a stupid scene.

I agree with the rankettes so far, including Movie Star. I could never really adjust to its wavelength

PRIMITIVE

Not to be mistaken with La Lennox's Diva LP track (and yes we should have a Moopy sync listen to that!), this is a moody and perhaps sultry gem in which Queen Roisin references the 'promordial soup'.

I need to get you out of your cave, man
I need to let you out of your cage and set you free
If tonight's the night, I'm gonna show you
I ain't got no game plan...

god, Primitive is simply the strangest, most atmospheric things she's ever done. I would not know how to describe this song to someone who hadn't heard it, the soundscape it creates is something else completely. The DRAMA by the time the above verse comes around and reveals itself to be THE CHORUS - it's fucking ridiculous honestly. she's so talented.

I... know what you're SEARCHIN' for
I pray you FIND IT. on your INSTINCT.

we really DON'T hear the primordial soup referenced enough in popular song. I'm sure it tastes better than oxtail at the very least.

(not sure anything on this album constitutes a popular song in real terms though)

You see - for me Movie Star is fabulosity city but Primitive is where the pace starts to get a bit jarring. That being said I don't have this on vinyl, so if Primitive is the first song on Side B then all is forgiven queen (it probably isn't but anyway).

the vinyl set is beautiful, I must dig it out when I return to my primary abode

I love Footprints. It's so slinky, bouncy and feel-good. Many of the songs almost sound like they sample other songs, like the synth riff throughout which could easily be from some 70s funk classic. I love that about this record.

This has started to blend a bit for me. The first four tracks were so PUNCHY. I'm still loving the sound but I thought it was going to more that throughout.
