Kylie - Say Something

Mildly distressing but it looks like she may not get that iTunes no.1 especially if that scarecrow drops tonight.
 
Yeah I’m getting the electro pop and disco vibe. It’s neither specifically one nor the other and for that reason it excels. I agree with ethereal - it’s too floaty and dreamy to be the standard disco we probably expected, but it’s all the better for it. It feels progressive, like The One, but has that driving Electro beat like Sweet Music. I like it the more I hear it.

plus - and this has often been my problem with Kylie - it really suits her voice. Sometimes she does songs that I just don’t think suit her even if they’re great pop tunes. This is RIGHT in her lane.
 
I’m going to play devils advocate and concur with dUb’s assessment that aside from this being an absolutely enormous song (and hence the rightful choice) they also went with it because the lyrics are remarkably prescient. I mean the song was written last year FFS.

I wonder if she’d be number one if both versions of Say Something were combined (she’s currently at 2 and 16).
 
I was slightly underwhelmed this morning, my immediate thoughts were that it starts off really good, then plods along and is completely saved by the outro. A few more listens and it has of course grown, its layered with so many different sounds, and I think cleverly chosen as the first single given the lyrics. I think the second single will be more 'disco' and in your face.

Someone has mentioned it already but there's a part which is quite basic and very 'Better than Today' but there's so many good parts of the song, and especially towards the end that it doesn't really matter. If we are talking comparisons, this would fit on Kiss Me Once for me, along with one of the better album tracks like Feels So Good.

8/5/10 so far.
 
Why are not enough people seeing the connection with Lost Without You? Without that we wouldn’t have Say Something. It is a (very) early blueprint of this song.
 
How’s it doing on Spotify? iTunes is a useful indicator but it’s been a while since it meant anything chart wise. She’s going to enter very highly on the downloads chart next week, but unless this is taking off on streaming she’ll be lucky to break top 75 on the main chart next week

Aside from the fact that this song wouldn't have been possible without Jon Green's input (and hence owes gratitude to his work on Golden), both tracks are influenced by music of the early 80s albeit different genres, both are multi layered and feature instrumentation which is scarcely found in Kylie's output.

The funk guitar is everything in Say Something.
 
A few hours ago Kylie was at #2 with 0.95 and #11 with 0.14, due to the sales coming from the normal and deluxe albums, so I think technicaly she has the biggest sales of the day.

I wonder if there was a tactic there about having a huge Thursday resulting in being added to several influential playlists on the streaming services on Friday...

It has a decent placement on New Music Friday so perhaps there was and it worked. I don't see it being added to Hot Hits UK though or the other really big playlists.
 
I deluded myself into believing she might be top of New Music Friday this week, oh well :D Quite a few big hitters out to be fair and 8th isn't bad if it even matters/means anything at all.

I assume chart wise expectations are at Dancing levels at best surely?
 
Also I'm loving this now, I agree initially some parts sounded questionably basic or not lead single worthy but the more you play the more the delights reveal themselves and it's easily her most interesting lead for years. There's so much to unpack.

Such a pristine little pop song (of a sub genre yet to be defined)
 
The bassline throughout this song is so addictive. It really creates a feeling of motion and energy.

I do think her vocal is a touch too nasaly. Hardly a new problem for Kylie Ann, but more pronounced in the past 5 years
 
I did my back in the other day, hurts like fuck and can barely move, so I might just lie here all day playing Say Something endlessly until it CURES me.

It'll probably be better live - I pretty much always prefer her live vocals to her studio work. One of the very few artists who is consistently better live vocally!

Parts of her Glastonbury set were utterly unlistenable with the vox to be honest :D don't kill me @monsta

However she's always been amazing when I've seen her on tour, KMO being the last time

I wouldn't use Glastonbury (or any huge open air festival/stadium performance like it) as a benchmark of live vocals for any performer to be honest.
 
I do think much of this is to do with Sky Adams and what he will accept from her as a sufficient vocal take.

A Lifetime To Repair on Golden did my nut in for this reason. She seems to have picked up some bad habits.

I don't think Say Something is anywhere near as bad.
