Also where I am in the North East I know of 6 schools and 7 pubs that have closed in the last week. The next for local lockdown for sure

I don't think we'll see another nationwide lockdown. No one wants it, not enough people would abide by it. But what we'll see is so many "local lockdowns" going on simultaneously that effectively it's the same, just with better PR. I'm not getting religiously back into clapping the NHS though. Or clapping Pret. (I was vocal at the time about "FFS what harm does it do, let us clap", but it'd be such an empty performative thing if it happened again)

Just departed the (quiet and socially distanced) pub knowing that even with the quiet and social distancing, it could well be the last time for a while. Depends how the numbers go in the next few days - if it goes 4000, 4500 etc then it's back to exponential and maximum caution. Doesn't bode well that we've been white on the government regional map for AGES and now we along with lots of other regions have turned blue. I've also heard a lot more from people who know someone who's got it this time, rather than it only seeming to be people on the news.

They'll definitely be trying to keep the Christmas splurge going. Buying expensive stuff we can't afford (for the kids) and pointless tat no one wants (for the adults) and all the associated parties are what chuck the world around the sun every year. The economy will be DOUBLE PLUS FUCKED without it. Which is why I'm surprised that IF the Oxford vaccine isn't a dud (hopefully the pause is just routine like they say), they're on about waiting til next year. It's already in production, the flu vaccination systems are already in place and ready to adapt, results due around the end of the month, let's go!! But maybe they will take the "don't worry everyone, we've fudged the figures as best we can, go and enjoy yourselves for a couple of weeks, you deserve it" approach.

That will all depend on case numbers, surely? If we are on our back getting thousands of new cases and hundreds of deaths then they really can’t.

Mind you, the very centrepiece of Christmas is at home anyway.
 
Also, what's this shit about a "moonshot" strategy? Why does everything have to be so wildly ambitious when they can't even manage something that functions on a basic level? Again, this obsession that Britain is somehow magically better than everyone else. Absolutely useless, the lot of them.

Well yes. Certainly Christmas Day is usually spent at home with the family. The lead up to it is a mega money spinner though.
 
The lead up is absolute jam packed shops, fully booked hospitality etc. There are companies that pretty much rely on Christmas to make enough money in a year I think... cancelling it would be a wrecking ball. But, indeed, maybe it distracts from Brexit and the small matter of us becoming a rogue country that breaks international laws.

It's hardly Tory style. If a Labour MP pissed in a bush it would be an absolute disgrace and a career-ender but if Michael Gove took a shit in the middle of St Paul's Cathedral, it would have been a perfectly reasonable response to a personal emergency and would not be a matter for public concern.

That industry is literally banking on a half-decent Xmas but, given how far in advance these arrangements are usually made, it's likely too late already. I know that there's been a suspicious silence on our works Xmas do and it's usually announced late August/early September.

Just saying that if we're in another full lockdown at Christmas then the whole "being at home" thing doesn't work unless you live with or very near your family.

Travel is still fine and actively encouraged to get people back to work they were doing effectively from home anyway.

Remember: Cramming yourself onto a packed commuter train is fine and safe, inviting a seventh close friend for a drink is instant death.
 
I’ve noticed by bus to work getting busier but it’s still half the number of people as pre lockdown.

Yes. All my family always come and stay with me a few days before Christmas, and we usually all head back over to Ireland to celebrate New Year. Christmas will be TERRIBLE with just us 3 here.:(
 
I've taken my first trains of the year recently, on the last 2 Sundays - 1st one was pretty dead but last Sunday was much busier. That it was sunny likely had something to the higher numbers. Most people wearing masks but I would say that everyone not wearing one was late-teens, early 20's age group.

Spare a thought for the FORRINERS for whom Christmas with the family is MOST DEFINITELY CANCELLED with the threat of imminent lockdowns, planes being grounded and ridiculous quarantines after travelling home.

I just returned from a 7-day visit to my folks but I have no idea when I'll be able to see them again :(
 
That's Scotland in a 6 people from a maximum of 2 households, inside or outside mini-lockdown.
 
Scottish Moopers I take it the rules are now the same as in England? I was listening to the first ministers questions and everything sounds the same as England, apart from no mention of Covid wardens.
 
If you are in a pub/restaurant you must wear your mask until you are seated and when you are moving around to go to the toilet etc. This has already been in place when I have been out for a meal (or I certainly have been doing it) but I haven’t been in a bar since before lockdown so can’t comment.

It's not the same. In England you can meet up with six people from six households. In Scotland it's six from two.

My daughters 18th is in October. We were meant to go on a cruise, but it was cancelled. I then booked for us to go to a nice hotel for the weekend, but I have booked for 8 people from 2 households. I am sharing with my son, my daughter and her boyfriend are sharing , and his Mum and Dad and 2 younger kids have a room. I assume this wouldn’t work out as we will be together for her birthday dinner although the facilities and spa/swimming pool are all closed.

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD. :argh:
 
This is probably a stupid question but as the rule is up to 6 people from 2 households that means I couldn’t have 5 friends from 5 households? Or 3 friends from 3 households.:confused:

No more than 2 households, regardless of numbers in those households. So if I want to see 2 friends and we all live alone, that's out because that's 3 people from 3 households. But if those 2 friends live together, then that's 3 people from 2 households which is street legal.
