A Song For Moopy: Iguana edition - THE RESULTS!

Honestly @Iguana the spreadsheet shit was nothing. This was over and done with in such a regimented tight time frame. Colour me impressed. That's the standard all future hosts should look at.

Honestly I don't think the initial "show interest poll" is necessary. Just dive straight in with sending the songs. There's several other features that keep interest throughout the process.

Thanks Ag, high praise indeed and I'll take it!

Voting just based on snippets in the recap video isn't ideal either.

I think this is the thing for me, the recap videos are great if you've sat with the songs for a while and want to sort out a final ranking but to vote based off just that triggers something unfair in me.

This is the first edition of the game I've played when I've been physically in work full-time and despite trying there's just no way to give the songs a fair assessment in a shorter time-frame when you can't play music at work, have to keep a basement full of plane-crash survivors alive, and also try and maintain a social life in the form of cheating at board games with @SDF.

And if I'm really honest I did think that I would get most people's 20 points, giving me around 600 points, of which the -126 points penalty would be manageable. But Moopy's opinion about songs in a minor key by deceased Finnish popstars has been noted.

:D

I think there's a fair argument that even if we don't do semis, a longer voting window (at least spanning two weekends) would give more people enough time to get to know the songs and vote. Voting just based on snippets in the recap video isn't ideal either.

No criticism to Ig though - when people entered they knew the drill. But it's something to keep in mind for the next one.
Agreed, the voting window seemed too short. Trim the opening topic and add a couple of days to the voting. Ideally covering two weekends. Although I doubt that would help SOME QUEENS who are clearly above the whole thing. I don't mean Suomi or cwej.

I did consider an extra week for voting but next weekend is Eurovision Rewatch so just practically it worked better yesterday. Plus I need my life back :D

This is going to be nuts. Which day of the week are you planning it? I presume you're relying on less players.

I will play it by ear a bit, figuring out a time when things are quiet enough for people to join in. It will likely be a Friday or Saturday night when there are tons of local or even a national lockdown to help with numbers. It may also work in December if all the Christmas parties have been cancelled.

Just wait til some queens only have TWENTY MINUTES!

I think Iguanavision has proved that it's totally possible to ditch the semifinals even with 40 songs. Otherwise it drags too much and the final will also be less exciting.

It was all a bit too much for me. I didn’t even have time to listen to every single song the whole way through. I cut them down to about 16 just using the recap video and then I listened to them in full once only each. I only remember about three songs.

I much prefer semis because 20 or so songs is much easier to deal with and rank them than 40.

I think it’s good to have different set ups though because everyone likes different things and this way everyone is pleased some of the time.

I wanted to do a live voting for mine but I was shot down in flames because it wasn’t fair to those who couldn’t make it, but if we all agree a date for the one-nighter then it could work. Though perhaps it’s best to do an afternoon so Diddy et al can join in.

I agree with this - every host so far has brought something a bit different and that's what has kept it fresh. I personally also love the semi-finals - mainly because it has felt like a victory in itself to qualify from them and adds another element of drama. I can definitely empathise that it would be less fun to be knocked out though, which is why I liked Soldi's second-chance lifeline twist, which basically led to Ag nearly winning!

I would be tempted to even just shamelessly do Melodifestivalen and have 5 heats with 8 songs in each, and then a second chance round, but this is just because I'm obsessed with it :D

Me for the ENTIRETY of this process

No time is going to suit everybody obviously, but for it to work I think we need at least 15 submissions for it, and I'd love to hit the 20s. But I obviously want as many people as possible even if they aren't submitting songs.

The thing I'd say about the semi debate is that Soldi's final had 600 replies. Ig's had 1.5k. I accept maybe the semis replicate that, but I totally lost interest in Kalavision when I was knocked out. No semis is more inclusive to the end. Semis add a layer of competition.

I wonder if there's a way we could lower the amount of songs without the semi process. Again some kind of private vote to cull a few, maybe by all previous winners or something. I DUNNO.

I feel like if someone is busy busy busy in the way that Suomi or Cwej are at the minute then it wouldn't have made much difference if it had been a list of 30 songs instead of 40.

I think letting anyone submit regardless of number and going forward straight to a complete final worked best. The contest was a roaring $ucce$$. Semis are great but I did lose interest when I was voted out despite having the best intentions to keep involved.

I remember thinking when Kalavision reached the 40s "why didn't he cut off new entries at like 30?" - but it's quite difficult because it gets a bit addictive as the host, in that you want as many people as possible to take part so that it's popular (I dunno, maybe that was just me). Plus it's a good problem to have if Moopy is busy enough to engage 40 players in several song contests a year!

This is what happened in Eurovision 1996 when there were too many countries. The juries voted secretly and 7 countries were knocked out before the final. It led to the tragic loss of this artistic statement from Germany:

This is coincidentally @Tetris-Rock 's favourite song of all time by the singer Leon

And I bet Leon then didn't bother to watch the final either :D

I think 30 songs is probably the max for a no-semis contest, 40 songs is just too much to take in all in one go, for me, personally. Unless it’s done over a longer voting period

I also think with semis then you’re under pressure to ensure you send a decent song so you qualify.

the beauty is we can try different things, Some will work better than others, but you won’t know unless you try.

But i sent a great song with Nice and Quiet and it didn't even make the wildcard!

I liked splitting it into two nights so the two sets of songs were easy to process. Had it all been one song reveal show then yes, that would have been too much.

Well, you did wait until the last minute to listen, which is totally your choice, but a lot of people attended the two listening parties and then had a week

Also @Ag - Iguanavision might have had more posts for the final but when you add up all the posts for the semis together with the final it probably works out similar. It’s just all compressed into one night.

Oh I'm fully aware of this trauma. I'm just tossing ideas about. Personally I loved having 40 songs. 30 song limit has merit.

I did think it meant Rit... some people only listened to so much and then got bored.

If that's the case, that's sad. I hope people send songs they like, not to try to get through semis

What’s the point in sending a non-competitive song, it’s a competition! You can find a song that fits both criteria.

Also I love you Kala, I really do, but I don't think you have the moral authority to come into this thread and pick holes in how I ran my song contest.

I’m really sorry if comes across like that, it wasn’t mean to sound like that at all. I think you did an absolutely stellar job! xx

I probably should have listened to them earlier, it’s just I struggled with the amount of songs, but that’s my own opinion!

Agreed. It serves a dual purpose.
It's like when you get to be music master on a road trip. I'd love people to appreciate the song too but the best part is just to see the reactions.

Otherwise I'd just enter the 1999 Slovenian second place entry.

41 songs is a lot on paper but honestly after the two listening parties and sticking the songs on in the background at work, I didn't find it too much to take in at all. Obviously I'm aware not everyone has the luxury to do that.

I don't see the problem with final votes being made up of people dissecting the songs, people who've only given one listen and people who listen to recaps only. A song that can please all three camps is going to the worthy winner at the end of the day.

Yes the time frame felt like it went by quite quickly, but it stayed on a high the entire time, and there were no lags or dwindling interest. Certainly not from me and I don't think from most other posters either.

And the digs keep on coming, though to be fair I probably did ask for it! Fully expecting 100 poses next weekend for the Kalavision results. 50 of them from me! :D
