So I've seen a LOT of chatter on Iguana's thread about the next ASFM contest, so I thought I'd start the sign-up process now as this weekend is apparently MUCH too far away for that sort of caper.

I also thought you might need time to familiarise yourself with the theme and the attendant labyrinthine network of rules and regulations so, for the purpose of disambiguation, mythbusting and disaster preparedness, a comprehensive list of rules can be found in BOLD TEXT below.

A handy rule of thumb I use for determining whether a song is a cover is to check Wikipedia. If someone has commercially released the song before the artist you're looking at (Be it as a single, an album track or original cast recording) then you, my friend, have a cover on your hands. If your song's only previous version was unreleased and by Tina Cousins, then what you're looking at is a demo. I don't think we need any more rules than that because we all know what a cover is and anyone who doesn't should already be in jail.

More details to follow at the weekend, when I was originally planning to formally announce the fucking thing. I'll also clarify that if your song contains enough ELEMENTS of the original but isn't a straight word-for-word version, then it's a cover (As long as it doesn't feature the original singer). The rules are deliberately loose because mob rule will keep us all on the straight and narrow.

Then that still classes as a cover. If there was a version commercially available before your version was released, it's a cover.
