So first up we shall be holding our admin elections. To quote Indie, this is what the admin role involves;

An ADMINISTRATOR is broadly the gatekeeper to Moopy, who holds the keys. Amongst other things, they can:
  • Turn Moopy on/off
  • Install forum upgrades
  • Talk to the server hosts, fix issues like downtime
  • Change the structure of the forums, colour schemes, add new forums, change banners
  • Access the backing database and root forum code
  • +all the stuff a moderator can do
Anyone can be administrator. Technical knowledge is useful, but not essential. There's plenty you can do without knowing your html from your elbow-tml.



Do YOU have what it takes to be admin? If so, please post your manifesto in here. Applicants have until 23:59 on Saturday September 19th to apply.

We are looking to fill TWO positions. If there are more than two candidates I will run a vote whereby posters can vote for up to two candidates.
If there are only two candidates I will run a vote of confidence whereby the candidates must achieve at least 50% confidence to take the post.

QUESTIONS?
 
Personally I'm looking to see any potential admins taking covid safe decisions for our little gay chat room.
 
Imho I don't see a great need for a change at the top. Indie is a staple and knows the job inside out. I know Octy has had a bit of rough ride, but I still think she's done a decent job.
 
Plus I don't see anyone ready to jump into that position. Normally admins do time as a mod before accending to the admin role. Is any of the current crop ready/ interested/ suitable?
 
I'm interested if anyone thinks they have anything else they can bring, but absolutely - very pleased with what we've got.
 
out of interest, are the current admin/mods listed anywhere? I don't see it mentioned anywhere but maybe it is. I'm just curious who's running the place now.

I posted it in the other thread. There is a "staff members" tab under the members bit at the top too.
 
I'll say the same thing as I said in the other thread: if we have anyone with the relevant tech knowledge, we'd like to hear from them. That's where I'm sorely lacking and I've felt that on a few occasions.
 
I chose to step aside as an Administrator a couple of years ago, but I think I’d quite like to throw my hat back in to the ring.

I know this has been discussed in the initial thread, but whilst I’m not the most prolific poster, I do believe there’s a lot I can offer (and have done so previously) to the role on a technical level.

With that said, if the consensus is that the existing Admins are fine as they are (and I’ve no doubt they both do a great job), then I’ll politely retire to the shadows.

Moopy will always be bigger than one member and I personally feel we need another person who can deal with the zeroes and ones - @Indie is the absolute unsung hero of this place and he has been left with big task. I won't do a nonsense like in the other thread, but I do have technical skills and actively enjoy the geekier side of things, (it forms a large part of my job as well), but I still have reservations about a lack of modding. But I am happy to put myself forward if I can be of use.

It's not necessarily a bad thing to have a proper contest for admin, although I hadn't expected it. I think all the nominees have things to offer

Yeah, there’s really no harm in having ZG on as a tech support admin. It’s not like anyone is getting PAID so it can only be a good thing to have a range of skills available on the admin team.
 
And Moopy is much more busy than it ever was over the past 6 or so years. If we had say 3 admin and 6 mods, it would surely be easier to get stuff done. And in the hopefully unlikely event that a mod disappeared for a while, it wouldn't make as big a difference

This is a good idea I feel. Might be wrong but wasn’t one of the issues that the mods/admin brought up during the tag debate was that there were times that they’d struggled to keep on top of things/complaints. Surely not a bad idea?
 
If we need more people then fair enough, but we really don’t want this place to be all chiefs and no Indians.
 
I am all in favour of more staff members though, it takes the pressure off people to be there all the time and free them up to be able to do other things. We have already said we will have up to 7 mods depending on how the voting results go, eg if it's really close for those in 5th, 6th and 7th then it is fair to let them have a chance. An extra admin could also be a good thing, but let's not be assuming anyone has a role confirmed yet, the election hasn't taken place.
 
How many people have vested an interest in becoming mod? If we are having up to 7 mods then does that not give everyone a place therefore we have no need to vote? Why don’t we just have 4 admin as well if that’s the case. :rolleyes:

So far there's 4 of the current mods who are standing again, me @big ron, @VoR and @ButterTart, only Wendy hasn't said anything yet, but that doesn't mean she won't, @Soldi, @Iguana and @ZenGiraffe also have vested an interest. (If I have missed anyone please let me know, and I apologise) But none of this is official, that won't happen until the admin election has finished.

Which was my point, really. If we have 7 people going for modship and we are having 7 mods then if we don’t get anymore interest we have no need to vote.
 
Technical help is always useful though. I wonder if there is some way someone could help write the code without having full access (as I say just for security issues). So for example if a particular code needs editing, the admin copy and paste it to tech support who do what needs doing and send it back to admin to in insert.

Going off how things end up at work, that just gets frustrating quickly if you aren't sure of the solution and need to experiment to figure something out. It is much easier to sort technical solutions the more directly you have access.
 
I'm a bit torn. More help is useful, no doubt. I'm open to the possibility of three admin.

"All chiefs, no Indians" is a very good point though. Where a mod team is there to make decisions, it's much easier with a few people than many, as is discussing sensitive matters for a particular poster.

There's only about 100 active posters on here in a good week. I can't see that we need >10% of them to be moderating the place.

Indeed, there's the security element too.

In that case, I'd say it's absolutely crucial that if there is a small number of mods, they are all active and not taking a back seat.

I still think it's not an issue to have 6 or 7 mods though. 100 users generate a lot of content!
