Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Crying at the Discotheque

The tweet is dead but I assume we are getting it as a single, which is wonderful news (unless she's changed her mind already).

Still no album tracklisting though...

WHAT A FUCKING WOMAN!

All over this. It's a fantastic song that can do with a REVIVAL :disco:

Let this be bizarrely huge and have her do an Alcazar covers album :disco:

She seems to be releasing a 'Best of the Kitchen Disco' covers album.

Well yes, she said that, didn't she? Wasn't it one disc Greatest Hits and the other covers?

Or am I inventing that?

I looked it up and I'm talking shit- it's supposedly just a GH with a couple of new songs.

It sounded like she was going with the bigger singles and then a decent number of the covers from the kitchen discos. It will be a bit of a disappointment if it is just a couple, but she's at least got her priorities right with Crying at the Discotheque :disco:

Feels a bit soon given her last album release was also a Greatest Hits of sorts - but then nobody bought that one. :D

Tracklist for the Greatest Hits, sadly fairly light on new stuff.

1. Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) 2020
2. Take Me Home
3. Murder On The Dancefloor
4. Get Over You
5. Music Gets The Best of Me
6. Mixed Up World
7. Catch You
8. Me & My Imagination
9. Today The Sun's On Us
10. Bittersweet
11. Starlight
12. Not Giving Up On Love
13. Heartbreak (Make Me a Dancer)
14. Young Blood
15. True Faith (BBC Session)
16. Do You Remember The First Time? (Live)
17. Come With Us
18. Wild Forever
19. Crying at the Discotheque
20. My Favourite Things

She really must despise I Won't Change You :D

It was played at around 7.50. I’d imagine it’s on BBC Sounds. You already know exactly what it sounds like.

It isn't a particular favourite but it is silly when they erase one of the hits. It isn't as if she has that many top tens to go round, and one of the Familia singles would have sufficed (I'd cut Come With Us).

Would have liked a few more covers, but I'll pick it up anyway.

Also being a Sophie Ellis-Bextor album it has obviously been put back to November. We'll give her a few weeks to settle on a 2021 date.

I’m saddest about there only being one Wanderlust track

Yeah I would have dug a little deeper on that one too, but I guess they didn't really feature in the Kitchen Disco sessions.

this is what she said on IG about I Won't Change You:

Genuinely couldn’t get hold of a backing track for it which is why I didn’t sing it in the discos. I wanted to but a lot of my old material from that album got lost by my old label. It’s sad but true. X

OK, but these are studio versions, not live edits right? So why not include the studio version which is on streaming and therefore clearly exists? :eyes: or is she saying she couldn't put it on the GH because she didn't do it live from the kitchen? seems a bit FAR FETCHED

It sounds like she is taking the line that she couldn't sing it live from home it isn't eligible for the album. I guess there is a logic to it if this project is meant to be a best of the discos rather than a regular GH.

I see she is saying that there were permission/rights issues with being able to use some of the covers as well. I'm sure Our House was mentioned as being included at one point (not that I am especially fussed that it is missing).

But I’m sure you can cover pretty much ANYTHING, certainly after a certain time span, no?

How else did all those random fake covers used to chart on downloads only before the real hit appeared, how did the X factor cover what the fuck they liked and then release it, and, most importantly, how did Mad Donna have a hit with The Wheels On The Bus?

And thinking about it, that’s just proved the point Groovejet is obviously a rights thing too- she can’t have the original (it’s the same on Read My Lips, where it’s a live version) so she’s just recorded her own version :D

I don't think there are any rules about a cover version, but there ARE rules if you sample it or change the song substantially.

To be fair she probably recorded a couple of covers then couldn't be bothered to do anymore. She is re-using the New Order one (and the Pulp one I think).

I always remember the Heat magazine review of that album. They weren't exactly ice-cubing their nipples over it (3 stars I think), but they did say something along the lines of she had being Sophie Ellis-Bex down to an art and how true. Nowhere Without You, Mixed Up World and Party In My Head are husky electro deluxe.

Going to youtube was too much work for our Sophie

I mean. I love it. But what does it bring that the Alcazar original doesn’t?

(Don’t hate me)
