I haven't said wait and see, I haven't said cases ≠ deaths - I've said there is more to look at than just cases, and I asked what IF deaths don't rise as rapidly as modelled/predicted - what then?

You literally just said that deaths and hospital admissions are a better metric than infections. What we're telling you is that it is a FLAWED metric because deaths is a delayed consequence of infections, so you're already two steps behind to try and contain the virus.

IF that’s the case then it’s good to know that this virus would be a lot easier to live with than people first thought and policies could be adjusted accordingly, absolutely.

But my point is that finding that out would involve taking a massive gamble that I don’t blame any government for not wishing to take, considering we’ve already seen once what the alternative outcome is.
 
But we can’t all stay in our houses forever, can we?

I think we need to find a way to live with the virus, unless you are in a vulnerable category in which case I do feel that the government should be encouraging shielding.

You don't need to find anything out. It is exactly what is happening in Spain and France. Even with social distancing in place, an upshot in deaths (+200 a day) has resulted after several weeks of rising infections. Why would the virus behave any differently in the UK?

The thing is, we are in the situation we are today because we all left the house. There are no good options whatsoever with this thing, and is why I am especially moody at the moment and just want to sleep for a year.
 
i think it's fairly straightforward logic that covid runs in lagging stages: infection > pre-symptomatic / incubation > illness > severe illness and hospitalisation > ventilation > death. it's a process that takes 3-4 weeks+

obviously people don't catch the virus and immediately drop dead. as in spain and france, initially the uptick in cases started with people under 45 before widespread community transmission lead to it spreading throughout the community. at its low point spain was reporting a single figure number of deaths a day but is now reporting 200+ a day. the logic that cases are up but "the death rate is low" is what trump was using when they first had a spike following the ending of lockdowns in the US and they are now at 200,000 deaths.

we are obviously never going to get to a position as severe as march, where the virus had been seeding invisibly since probably the tail-end of 2019 but decisions over the summer; 'eat out to help out', 'get back to the office', 'it's your patriotic duty to go to the pub', 'go on holiday abroad' are all partially why we are in the position we are in now. the continued lack of honesty is disheartening also; i don't see what is achieved by blaming the public for doing as the government encouraged them to do nor telling us we should report our neighbours to the police. from a health psychology perspective it would be so much better to unite society in a common goal, dare i say it a reinvention of 'blitz spirit' but this government is determined to do everything wrong. centralising test and trace with private companies who have no experience, headed up by dido harding; somebody with no public health expertise. a continued failure to tell us how many people are actually being tested everyday. the list goes on and on.

the other thing that i don't understand is the failure to enforce a stronger mask mandate. the science is unequivocal now on the benefits they present and nationwide mask mandates are in force in spain, france, many parts of the states etc. in london i see about 40% of people wearing masks on public transport and in shops, many below the nose or on the chin. if we aren't even being encouraged or mandated to do something as little as this then god knows where we will be in midwinter.
 
Here in Lanzarote, I would say 98% of people are compliant in mask wearing. The police issue on the spot fines to anyone not wearing one and shopkeepers, hotel staff etc have no hesitation in enforcing the rules reminding you to put one on if you’re not wearing one.
 


It’s not looking good for us and there seems to be zero incentive to actually roll back anything

The beginning, up to around early March, where lots of people are willing the UK to break into the top ten of global cases/deaths is bizarre with hindsight. Although given how surreal the situation felt at the time, is understandable.

Then you get everyone looking forward to a couple of weeks off work at home, with predictions of the pandemic all being over by April/May :disco:

Well, I, for one am gutted we've fallen out of the top 10 again. As a leading player on the world stage we should be at least 10th.
 
Yeah same. I’ve gone from ‘we won’t lock down in full again’ to now thinking it’s now looking inevitable.

I’m starting to seriously consider heading home. I can leave for up to 24 months and keep my visa and would rather spend lockdown with family and in Summer if it’s what the case is.

Only certain areas of Madrid (coincidentally the ones with the higher rates of immigration and poverty :eyes: ) are in lockdown - and it's not even a full lockdown like it was in March. Parks and gardens are closed, but businesses are still open (at 50% capacity). You can still leave the house but you can only leave your district for work or care reasons. Back in March you were only able to leave your house for shopping.
 
I am absolutely terrified at what the coming months hold. But then I feel guilt for feeling that way, because I know that it is completely out of my control (except for following the rules) and that there are those who it will affect in much harsher ways than me.

I am also so scared at losing my Nan. She is my last surviving grandparent and means the world to me. But she is not in good health and is currently in hospital (non Covid related). I have an awful feeling that I am going to lose her this winter, even though she doesn’t have any terminal illness. It’s an irrational feeling that I can’t shake off.
 
I think pubs/hotels and hospitality are definitely gone. They seem like they are trying to keep schools open for now. I received an email today from my sons school to say that someone in the year above him has tested positive.
