I may be wrong but are the figures not just a bit of a hot mess? I am still only really following the main figures announced by gov as the rest all conflict each other greatly. I don’t even know if it is the figures that are so much conflicting but opinions greatly differ. Who do we believe as everyone seems to have their own opinion on it? I am quite happy following what Whitty and Vallance are saying. If that makes me senseless and a follower of sorts then SO BE IT.

IMHO, best not to place all your faith in one set of figures or one voice etc. Hence despite the temptation to shut off all news, social media, forums etc and just listen to Dr John Campbell every day I still like to keep an eye on what everyone else is saying. Just listening to the government is fine, just don't be surprised if it gets a bit confusing with the constant u-turns and "you shouldn't wear a mask, okay maybe you should wear a mask, but don't go to work, no wait please do go to work, no hang on maybe don't go to work" etc. Seems to me they bumble around a bit like you tend to hope good leaders don't do.

The actual government reported figures have their problems like weekend reporting delays, the fact that early on only people who were dying of it were tested so the figures were roughly 100-200k per day, etc. So you put it into additional context like the ONS random sampling and the prediction model of the Kings College ZOE study. Neither of those should be taken as gospel on their own either (ONS relies on inexperienced people trying to shove swabs down their throats at home without touching their tongue or teeth; ZOE app is based on symptom reporting and largely downloaded by people who are intensely interested in / nervous about the symptoms and would tend to lean hypochondriac, so tends to be the most pessimistic)

My feeling from the combination is the growth is slowing or possibly flattening out at what the government reports as around 6000 cases per day, 30 or so deaths per day but not really going down much so may become the "new normal" over winter. But always keeping an eye on those official daily figures as sometimes you get an unexpected "oh shit it just almost doubled in a day".

I don’t think I could be BOTHERED....Actually scrap that. I KNOW I could not be bothered analysing all these figures daily, which is why I keep an eye on what is on the news but try not to get too absorbed as I don’t think my nerves could actually take it.

“And now on BBC1, get your party hats on, as we celebrate the 100th edition of THE CORONA SHOW”

SO THIS APP. I don't want it but I also don't want to be turned away from places. Will it work with Bluetooth turned off?

JUST USE IT.

It’s not tracking your location. It just alerts you if you have been in close proximity to someone who has tested positive for Coronavirus

The whole reason the app got delayed is because the Apple-Google API is privacy focused so the government tried to do it their own way instead and didn't listen to everyone in the tech industry telling them it's a waste of time. When they found out for themselves that their own way didn't work on iPhones very well due to privacy and battery usage restrictions built into the OS (that the tech industry tried to warn them about) they had to cave in and redo it through the Apple-Google API.

As for that, it exchanges anonymous tokens and is even open source. If it was doing anything nefarious, the many eyes scrutinising the code would've flagged it up by now

tl;dr the government can't track you with the COVID app even if they originally wanted to. It's safe.

Are they actually announcing anything up there or is it just stats and waffle?

So they spent 6 months trying to make an app that DID track us? LOL what a shower of cunts.

Yep, despite everyone telling them to just use the open source anonymous version google/apple worked on that every other government planned to use

Of course someones mate will have made a few quid having a crack at the UK own brand version

It's this unfortunately. Was hoping not, but deaths do seem to be catching up as we should really have expected :/
It's why I'm surprised the restrictions are still relatively loose. I think that rumoured circuit breaker is inevitable now, and I doubt it will be just for two weeks.

Pessimist!Cloud would've put a tenner on a full lockdown or "circuit beaker" or whatever their PR company told them to call it this time, before the end of October, but got called a doomer everywhere. I fear this could well happen though.

Pessimist!
Possibly. I like to think I'm being a realist but it is a wafer thin margin between pessimism and realism. And equally between realism and optimism.

Also, if people are too optimistic, that's when people get lax and the virus spreads quicker. So if we have to err to one of those sides, I reckon a touch too pessimistic is the way to go.

If you look at the live data, the latest figure of 71 was updated yesterday

And if you look back every tuesday prior the theres a post weekend spike. Deaths are going up a bit, dont get me wrong, but its not wildly out of control yet either.

Not what I'm seeing on the official government website:

Nono, I wasn't calling you a pessimist, far be it for me to judge someone else's optimism or pessimism levels. I was referring to myself, as noted earlier I have pessimist and optimist moods so referred to my past pessimist-mode self as "Pessimist!Cloud"

Realism is what we're both doing I think. Even me if you average out the pessimism and optimism moments.
