If we do circuit break, does that mean everything shuts down like the very first lockdown? Or is a circuit break in France different to the one in Ireland?

a temporary super-strict lockdown focused on a large problematic area such as Paris designed to immediately stop everyone/anyone mingling long enough to prevent things spiralling out of control while they work out more workable medium-term measures. I think.

 
@Cloud in your honest opinion do you think we are heading for another lockdown? I know you are not Boris Johnson but I am honestly trusting your judgement on all of this.

Well Madrid is in lockdown, you can't just leave the city like that, but we don't have to stay at home. But what can I do, with half the city infected and all bars closing early. Not that I'd go to a bar right now, I had some drinks outside, but it's starting to get cold. I'm exhausted.

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I'm probably not the great covid guru that you think, just slightly obsessed with it (thanks anxiety!)

I think the coming week will be key, though. For example, are we genuinely on a plateau, in which case we'd maybe "keep calm and carry on"? A couple of weeks ago I'd have put a tenner on a lockdown when it was exponential (partly also because the restrictions imposed and things said felt like "preparing us for it mentally"), then when it levelled off last week I thought "huh, maybe the measures actually worked"... now that we're seeing all this confusion with the figures I have NO idea what to think. It's a rollercoaster. If we keep seeing a rise in the coming week then I reckon a "circuit breaker" seems inevitable but if we've found all these "forgotten tests" and the numbers go sensible again then maybe it's just a version of freshers flu season and will fade again and we'll avoid a lockdown.

@Rita - basically, we won’t be returning to normality until we have an effective vaccine. Best case scenario is that we have this early-2021 and is rolled out to the entire population by Summer 2021.

Until then, expect restrictions to continue to various degrees of severity. I don’t think we’ll get anything on the scale of what we had earlier in the year, we may have a short sharp “circuit breaker” lasting 2-3 weeks (although it won’t close down the retail sector to just essential shops like last time).

The sad thing is that we could live a lot closer to normality right now if people just respected social distancing at all times and practiced good hygiene.

I've already started hearing some anti-vax scaremongering. My cousin said this weekend that she has a friend who's a doctor who said she wouldn't have the vax for at least 2 years to make sure it's safe.

My thoughts are INJECT ME NOW
 
They’ll just further lock down the areas that dared to vote Labour and cabinet ministers will ensure their own seats don’t have any measures taken against them.
 
More news coming out today re: a vaccine - depressing but inevitable, I feel?

It is not cost effective for the NHS to vaccinate young, healthy people. But I do resent the idea of having to live with the constant threat of a virus that can still kill young people (seemingly quite randomly) or leave them with chronic health problems.

 
I presume if you wanted you could pay for one privately so it’s only going to fuck over THE POOR.

I can see the argument for leaving young healthy people until the end, but to not vaccinate them at all seems counter-productive. It will almost certainly be cheaper in the long run than dealing with the costs of the ones that do get it and are hospitalised or have long term effects. Also, there will be people who have legitimate reasons for not getting vaccinated (due to their other medical issues), so they need as many other people to be vaccinated as possible.
 
I will happily get vaccinated when one is available.

I have put so much shit into my body over the years that it would be hypocritical not to.

This story really depressed me this morning :(

So basically as it's as it's been all along, they're aiming for natural herd immunity with any vaccine just acting as a protection for the most vulnerable. As for 1/10 of symptomatic people getting organ damage and other long term complications, OH WELL

I can't see how there's any way out of this, social distancing for life for anyone who isn't under 18 or over 50. Keeps us in the perfect position of "get up, go to work, come home, go to bed"

(N.b. in a very pessimistic and upset mood. Hopefully reality won't be as bad as my worst fears.)

If they aren't bothering to vaccinate everyone in the UK, I can only assume that the wealthy countries fully intend to just allow the poorer ones to die off in an attempt to reduce migration. Cunts.
