on another note, why DO American politicians work so deep into their careers? McConnell is 78, Pelosi is 80 (!) - WHY haven't these people retired? Aren't Americans always banging on about their brilliant 401(k)s? In the UK they can't wait to fuck off to the House of Lords and never lift a legislative finger again in their lives. So why are these ancient sacks of dust propped up by botox and state-sponsored incompetency STILL GOING TO WORK EVERY DAY? Is everyone in American politics THAT terrified of the opposition seizing power?

My friend has just made me realise that this election is literally going to drag on for weeks beyond Election Day because of all the postal votes. :manson:
 
Not to mention when Trump drags it through the courts up to his newly minted Conservative SUPREME.
 
Surely if Biden (or indeed Trump) wins a couple of vital swing states on the night (Pennsylvania in particular) making it virtually impossible for the other candidate to win then surely a few weeks of waiting for all the results shouldn’t matter too much.

Only if it's close. If he gets battered he won't have a leg to stand on. With all the early voting, there's still a reasonable chance we'll know on the night for all intents and purposes, even if he refuses to concede.
 
And I know we’re not supposed to put faith in polls but surely they’re picking up plenty of voters that have already cast their ballot and thus making them a lot more reliable no?
 
I can't see this going on for weeks unless we get a tie or thereabouts. There are a couple of unlikely scenarios that put the map at 270-270 or about 274-266. That's certainly enough for Trump to throw a paddy. The most likely scenarios are looking at about 300 to 315 for Biden, so Trump can pack his bags and moan about it to Fox News for the next few years (although mayb not as they're as likely to stay faithful to him as the republican party are, once he's gone)

Yes the only problem being that early voters are overwhelmingly democrat so there's still a need to be cautious on that count.

Current voting looks like 70% Biden at the moment, but polling on voters yet to vote has Trump in the lead at about 60%
 
I've become addicted to Five Thirty-Eight videos. This one is quite helpful regarding what to watch in terms of whether this is going to drag beyond election night or not.

texas and flordia are quick counters so what happens here will be a good gauge on how things are going. if biden were to win florida it is game over for trump and even if biden loses texas but it is close; it will offer an insight that biden is in for a good result

internal district-level polling in 2016 should have sent alarm bells ringing for the clinton campaign in 2016 as they were clearly losing non-college educated white voters in huge numbers. this time the district level internal polling has alarm bells ringing for gop strategists. trump is -10% in many districts he won by +10% or more

also the narrative of the next week will be of no help for trump with covid cases breaking daily records with an explosive rise in cases; they could possibly see a day of 100k confirmed cases before election day?

I don't quite understand the point of smearing Hunter for taking drugs and engaging in a rather MEH sex act. He's not the one standing for election.
