I just got my 23&Me Kit in the mail today. Has anybody had any experience with this kinda thing?

I'm curious to see the results but I feel like they're going to be SUPER boring.

Would anyone like to share their experience or opinion? I'm curious to know especially from anyone who's tried DIFFERENT kits. 23&Me and Ancestry seem to be the most popular ones.
 
I kind of know a fair bit about my ancestor thanks to other family members, basically just a load of Irish peasants since forever.

I don't like the idea of private companies having my DNA, nor some random sister/brother turning up. My Dad was a rascal in the 70s.
 
I mean I know it sounds a bit defeatist, but don't WAY scarier private companies already HAVE our DNA?
 
My friend's dad took one of those for a LAFF and discovered that his real dad was not who he had grown up with but someone else completely different and that he is in fact 50% Jewish. Both his parents are dead now so it actually caused him a bit of TRAUMA because he has so many questions he cannot get an answer for. MESSY.
 
I was raised by two women and conceived through artificial insemination, the clause of the contract being that my moms and the donor would be entitled to the STRICTEST anonymity.

So you can imagine everyone's DELIGHT when I took a DNA test last year and it connected me to my HALF BROTHER. :D
 
I'd totally do one of these but they seem a bit PRICEY.

I did an Ancestry one earlier this year. It has revealed FUCK ALL of interest so far. Apart from my dad (confirmed as my dad :bad:) I have one third cousin match and all the rest are fourth cousin or worse.

My mum has quite dark colouring as did her dad, so we were convinced there is SOMETHING exotic in that line, possibly Romany gypsy, but so far they are just all from fucking Northamptonshire and my DNA ethnicity estimate is 100% Northwestern Europe. UGH!
 
It'd be fair pointless doing a DNA kit, @Gangsta Nancy Lam summed it up nicely.

Have done a bit of family digging in recent months for no good reason. Pretty much 95% Yorkshire, with an Irish woman thrown in for good measure. Probably the most exciting things I've discovered are my great-grandad being the landlord of a pub I like (and dying there in his 30s :( ), and some of my ancestors moving to the US (fans may have remembered when I got in touch with a distant relative there)

As far as I know the only people who have my DNA are the police. As I don't plan on committing any sexual assaults I can deal with that.
 
I am wondering if I should have posted my full name and DNA make up on here, but figured if I wake tomorrow to my bank depleted I'll just finger EVERYONE ON moopy. :)
 
I’d love to do one of these but they seem utterly non-specific. I don’t need to know where my ancestors from 10’000 years ago where from, but rather the last couple of centuries.
 
If Saturday night goes as well as usual, I would have birthed an entire new LINEAGE :emoji_smiling_imp:
 
My brother did one and got 50% Polish and then most of the rest was Scandinavian. My mother is ginger and Northern so I presume there's Scottish/ Viking heritage.
 
A friend of mine took the test convinced it come up with something interesting about him. Turns out he's very FRENCH from NORMANDY and BRITTANY. We laughed at him.
 
Having researched my family a bit, the main revelation was that my mother came from poor British lineage and my father from Polish nobility (verified by numerous sources). So it's a real melting pot of culture and explains a lot about my parents and who I am.

My grandmother was an O’Donnell, but I haven’t really paid much attention to the actual connection. I think her father was a 2nd cousin of his father or something.
 
I did quite a bit family tree stuff about 10 years ago. My mother's family, particularly on her father's side I managed to get back to the late 1700s and was still in Bristol, and within a very small area of central/east of the city as well. All slums, of course.

On her mother's side I was pleased to get to Ireland in the late 1800s, and the O'Malley's (not my password for anything :side-eye:) in Kilkenny.

It's a lot harder on my Dad's side because on his dad's side they all died decades ago, although we know our name is from Lancashire, and we managed to get to Bolton in about three generations.

On his mum's side again we couldn't get out of Bristol.

No wonder I tried twice to move away but was catapulted back.
 
I just got my results back. I'm Mesopotamian AS FUCK. Like 90%. I'm the first generation to have grown outside our ancestral homeland.

The other 10% is Coptic Egyptian, Levantine and a bit of Arab.
