Relisten #7: Kylie & Garibay (EPs) - SLEEPWALKER/KyliexGaribay (TONIGHT! 04/11/20 at 8pm)

The cover shot is SO gorgeous.

Wow, Black and White is totally lovely. A bit LEFT. But still perfectly KYLIE AND SHIMMERY.

coming to Shaggy's bit now. OK not sure what is happening here. OK it's now a weird EDM banger that sounds very 2015.

well, it's two thirds of a good song. :)

If I Can't Have You is such a BANGER! I'm such a SLUT for a good DEEP HOUSE DROP.

Put it in me!!!

where are you guys? why am I doing this alone? :basil:

I seriously think this song is excellent and would be a major highlight of any of her 10s albums.

I generally prefer the second EP I think. Black & White is good even with Shaggy’s input.

I was watching a German TV show featuring hot moustached gays being miserable in East Berlin. Akzeptierest du bitte meine Entschuldigung.

Your Body is quite flaccid.

The other two are GOOD TO GREAT.

Interesting side project from a time she didn't really seem to know where she belonged in the pop scene. B+

Are you pretending the first one doesn’t exist? :D

It’s a crime Sleepwalker isn’t on Spotify. It was rough sounding (maybe it was just the Garibay sound) but it was the better EP.

I've only just heard Can't Have You. Yes, it's quite decent really. 7/10

For a scale:

10/10 Glow (ooh ooh ooh ooh :disco:)
13/10 Wait
10/10 Break this Heartbreak
05/10 Chasing Ghosts

Was this really played during the KMO tour? I have absolutely no memory of it and know I wasn't drunk as I ran all the way to Buchanan bus station to get my bus.

Yes. Before the show.

I would've loved a full Kylie + Garibay album. Their songs together were wasted in my opinion. They could've been much bigger hits.
I personally love 'Black and White'.

Sorry I was at work still during this - listening now. "Black and White" already injecting into my soul :disco:

I've put B&W on. I don't think I thought it was as good as their other efforts at the time, but this is going off and the quiet bits are pure subdued Chemical Brothers fantasia. The video makes me think of the Wouldn't Change A Thing cut scenes (but through an Everything I Wanted lense!)

There's just no stoppin' the Kylie poppin'

The best of the Garibay tracks, which is most of them here, absolutely renders their work into electronic auteur status.

A Kylie + Garibay album would have been a DREAM. Especially coming after that uninspired Kiss Me Once. Or INSTEAD of it.

That's 5 airtight 10s I've got from their project. Their studio stoned bliss to be continued at some point please.

I'm really baffled as to why these beautiful songs were never put into a proper album.
Had Kiss Me Once never happened, I wouldn't have bothered at all. But to know that these songs were just scattered like that and only Kylie's fans ended up listening to them, almost angers me.

They should have been put into the album along with Crystallize, Golden Boy and Sleeping With the Enemy, which is her Massive Attack moment, also as a main track (am I forgetting any other outtakes and overspills?) It could have been something truly special.

It was probably down to RocNation, no? I mean she did say she at the time that she had recorded three different albums (she seems to be in the habit of doing this) each in a different genre/style.

Apparently she doesn't hold the rights to a lot of that material because she didn't write it - unlike this - which is why they released it of their own volition.

She also recorded with RedOne for an album didn't she - I'm not sure which?

Which comes to prove what an inadequate move that was for her. I think she/they thought they would 'crack America' and obviously that never happened.
From my view, you only 'crack America' when you don't care to cater for their tastes. Her only two grand hits there weren't of 'American sound' and all British artists that had success there, didn't really 'adjust' their sound to appeal to the american audience. People like Adele, One Direction etc.

I was also at work when this started, but I'm listening to Sleepwalker now. I had both EP's, but never listened, and I had low expectations for some reason. But I love it so far:

Glow - 10
Wait - 9
Break This Heartbreak - 8 (despite the kind of dated sounding drop_

I feel like this would be good for a nighttime walk. I'm finding it all very melancholy so far.

Poor Eddie has had such a rough day. First Jark listens to the Disco leak and now this flopping plus the RAGE over tagging. Leave him alone.:(
It did alright in the end :eyes: I credit Jark for reviving it when all hope seemed lost at 9pm

Chasing Ghosts - 5 (Kylie sounds breezy, but its pretty inconsequential, and the background dancehall vocals are annoying)

Black and White - 7 (Shaggy fit into it better than I expected, but Kylie has done this better before. I like the breakdown at the end)
