FOLLOWING KYLIE’S HISTORICAL ACHIEVEMENT, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE CHART FACTS?

TOOK FOUR WEEKS TO ENTER THE TOP FORTY AND
ANOTHER FIVE WEEKS TO REACH THE TOP TEN WHERE IT SPENT EIGHT WEEKS BEFORE REACHING NUMBER ONE
 
Samantha Fox was the only English solo female artist to have three top ten hits in both the US and the UK in the 80s. With five different songs too, Touch Me was the only one that was top 10 in both.

It took 16 weeks to get to number 1, which matched the record set by Power of Love which she had covered earlier that year.
 
Not a favourite fact as I love her but Dannii’s Success spent two weeks at #11 in the UK, kept out of the top 10 in week two by the pesky Kylie entering at #10 with Shocked.
 
How Do I Live by LeAnn Rimes was the best selling song to reach no.7. It spent 36 weeks on the chart.

That was the weirdest week ever. I lived in France at the time and when I got the paper a day after and saw the chart, I was agog at all the older acts who had hits that week. I also didn’t even know Cher had a single out, France being rather behind the times.

Also, 25th October 1998 happened to be my 21st birthday. I celebrated entirely alone as I hadn’t made friends yet other than two English people who were working in schools and they had gone home for the weekend. It was shit.

Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round” actually took longer- 17 weeks- but the first two weeks of its chart life it was just outside the top 75 so it gets overlooked as being 15 weeks to get to number one.

LOVE THIS STORY! Did you do an ERASMUS year?

I remember being iny nan's kitchen both loving how much an OLD WOMAN was number one :D

I know it’s Sheena you’re asking but I did an Erasmus year in a country where Siouxsie & the Banshees had made a huge resurgence with their last album and was disappointed when I came home that everybody here was nonethewiser. Those non internet days.

Where was your Erasmus year? And did you love it? I've never met a soul who didn't rank it less than fantastic.

I was in Coimbra, Portugal but regularly made the 2 hour trip to Lisbon for the weekend. I had a great time, a bit different to most Erasmus in that most other people who arrived when I did were there for a month before moving onto Spain to finish the year there whilst I stayed in Portugal the whole time so all my friends were Portuguese. Best way to get fluent quickly.

AMAZING! You're the first person I've ever met(?) Who did Portuguese on their Erasmus year, but you're so right, despite me literally hanging around with other English people/Americans/Germans who spoke perfect English I came away with a level of German I'd have never got otherwise. It really is the only way to learn a foreign language.
 
Probably not the SEXIEST of chart facts, but more so just my interest because I love the artists... also US-centric so I apologize in advance:

Madonna holds the joint record for most #2 hits ("Causing a Commotion", "Material Girl", "Erotica", "Cherish", "Express Yourself", "I'll Remember", "Frozen"). I'll Remember was #2 for four weeks - kept off by All-4-One's "This I Swear". Taylor Swift recently tied the record - although several of hers are collabs or didn't stay in the top ten for more than a week :eyes:)
Cyndi Lauper was the first female act to score four top five hits from the same album with She's so Unusual (GJWTHF #2, Time after Time #1, She Bop #3, All Through the Night #5)
Whitney's "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" spent only one week at #1 but thereafter spent a record breaking twelve consecutive weeks at #2.
Lana's Born to Die is the only female album to spend more than 300 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 without hitting #1.
 
I think it's between Madonna and Kylie for #2 hits in the UK isn't it?

French/German degree so year three was abroad, but not Erasmus. France was a delight in a wonderful town called Montauban, Austria was horrid, never want to set foot in the nasty, small minded bunch of right wing cunts again.
