I naturally hated "It's Like That" in '05 because it did better than "Hung Up" did at radio later that year, but it's aged rather well considering how current it sounded then.

to be fair outside of 2 months per year, Mimi has no commercial standing whatsoever so I'm not sure that's the smartest argument to make. :eyes:

It's Like That is utterly pristine. Amazing comeback track. Fun, fresh n' flirty - it's one for the huns. Spectacular video. Them chickens is ash and I'm lotion. *ashy elbow choreo*

"We Belong Together" is objectively a nice but not great song but it's so momentous in context and her delivery elevates it. Such a classy sultry gem.

these days I find it really striking how extremely simple We Belong Together is as a song - listening back to back with her 90s balladry, musically in particular it feels extremely straightforward. obviously a major classic, perhaps the production could give a little more, but it is THE song of the decade according to Billboard and all discerning queens, so we won't CRITIQUE IT.

I think We Belong Together is a perfect pop song. Every second of melody is just amazing. I’m glad it was the billboard top song of the decade. At the time I was upset at my high school boyfriend who said he had never heard it before. Imitated (by Mariah herself) all the time but never duplicated.
 
"Shake it Off" is a cute bop by Mariah standards. Has it endured? Yes it has.

yeah, Shake It Off is a super lightweight bop but I think that's actually a bit deceptive because melodically and lyrically it's rock solid, full of hooks at every twist and turn, and her whisper-at-200-mph vocal delivery is ICONIC and could only be Mimi. it's a fantastic song.

"Mine Again" is the shouty retro gem I secretly loved and played between COADF listen sessions. Lovely if a bit of a racket.
