Where am I going wrong with ASFM?

I think you’re disadvantaged because you missed the earlier competitions which gives you an idea of what DOES and DOESN’T go down well.
 
J-SAR was a middle aged white woman doing Radio 2 soul.

The top 3 of ASFXMAS were electro indie pop and and early 80s Europop, so go figure.
 
It's a pot shot every time! But really the fun is entering and listening to the songs that other people pick - if you make the experience entirely about your own song, it's not that much fun I don't think

I love the championing of other people's songs too and I've discovered some absolute gems this year that I still listen to

Yes this. My own entry is only part of the experience. I've only been disappointed once, but not to this scale.
 
The only time I entered to WIN was with 1ul, which came second, thankfully I was in the pub (IMAGINE!) and too off my nut to care (fun aside, I didn’t pay for a drink ALL DAY because I was too paranoid to go to the bar!)

I think it’s better to just up enter something you love and hope other people like it, I prefer a DIVISIVE ENTRY anyway.
 
I always enter songs I like and would/already listen to myself, but I see ASFM as A BIT OF FUN more than anything and whilst I enjoy getting QUITE invested into the results over a drink or two, I don’t tend to mind what wins/what places where (Caramella Girls aside).
 
Apart from Dragonette, I couldn't name a single winner. I can honestly say I thought I had it in the bag every time. Why do anything other than double down on one's indulgence I say.
 
ASFM rules:

1_ Only play if you can commit the time and energy to enduring 40 songs at least 3 times over and completing the voting process
2_ Pick a choon you like
3_ Don't shit the bed
 
The hardest thing about ASFM is that you have to dedicate about 4-5 evenings/nights of your life to it if you want the full experience with all reveals/flag galas etc. I have lost lots of sleep and valuable time only to endure hours of bad music and humiliation in the voting process.


But secretly, it’s all been a joy.
 
I have a couple of players I’ll tend to consider when I pick the song (e.g. if I’m going rock I’ll try to cater to @Reindieer @dmclaus and @WeihnachZenGiraffe, if I’m going dance or pop I think more about what @Christmas Tisches @Seasons gREETings or @Ag would like). It’s not an exact science but it helps me to temper my worst excesses and broadly pick songs with a target audience in mind.
 
When is the next one? I've been grooving to my next one for what seems like eternity. And there's no way it's winning - it's too good for that kind of a comedown.
