Could it be that people people with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to catching it in the cold of winter?

we don’t need everyone vaccinated by June. Almost everyone coming into hospitals is over 50. If you can vaccinate over 50s and the vulnerable, that should be done well before June in theory. That then takes the strain off the NHS.

I don’t know why this hasn’t been discussed but surely the next phase would be to stop the spread, which would mean bypassing the 18-49s (sorry for everyone reading) and vaccinate the 5 to 16 year olds, followed by students.

When are the government going to admit that schools are a major cause of spread?
 
I totally believe that schools should be the last to shut, but I feel we've reached that point now that they probably do need to close for a short circuit breaker. Also teachers need to be up there in the vaccination program as a priority.

Last week I saw a lady at work who was probably my first long covid patient. She is a teacher and caught it in October. Since then she hasn't been able to work and various parts of her body just aren't functioning as they should. It was really sad listening to her saying she most likely caught it from school.

This is fucking scary, we're still a week away from hospitalisations from the Christmas mixing.
 
Are any of the Nightingale hospitals open again yet? The one in Manchester doesn’t appear to be.
 
One of my friends is a London paramedic and he's been posting similar on Facebook, and about how bad the ambulance backlog is at the hospitals

I'm a bit confused by this, I've looked at the source data and I can't match up what they're saying at all.

Edit: I've found it. There are disclaimers around the time series only commencing in August, and I think there are degrees of estimates for the first wave. Much like most covid data.
 
I've noticed that several people on my Facebook, who were all saying we need to get on with our lives, have gone quiet about it. I'd have more respect for them if they admitted they were wrong.

I've not seen anyone admitting they were wrong, but there's definitely a bit of backpedalling and revisionism.
 
A friend’s son’s teacher has just died of it- contracted from a child and a perfectly healthy 55 year old.

And one of my best friends, who is a nurse, has said her team is absolutely decimated with NHS staff who have it. She’s come home today feeling rotten and has had a test immediately, as they’re expecting her to go back tomorrow morning if it isn’t Covid.
 
I do wish my professional body would call it and say were only seeing emergency/ urgent appointments only rather than allowing all and sundry in right now. I don't understand why we should be exposed unnecessarily. If kids are off school then parents will bring them in because they have nothing else to do.
 
I've come into the office today and I'm practically the only one here! This is an office that should usually have about 250-300 people in.
 
Are the hospitals that were created because of Covid also at capacity? I know that earlier this in Scotland the SECC venue was meant to be turned in to makeshift hospital for when Glasgow hospitals were at capacity, but was it ever used? I also remember London and Harrogate had covid hospitals set up...

Not sure about England but up here nursing students who were in their last year of training were released from university to go and work in hospitals to support the covid effort.

They weren’t really needed then though, were they? Certainly not in the makeshift hospital created at the SECC. Saying that, I am not really sure if hospitals in Scotland are near capacity like a lot of England are at the moment.

My borough is currently at 723 cases per 100k. Insane.
 
Numbers here have eased off a little - but I also believe it's due to less cases being reported over the holidays rather than the entire country being under Tier 3/4-equivalent since December 16 (exception being December 24-26).

However, the state of Saxony is an absolute COVID-nightmare. Every district is deep in the red, as bad a 600 cases per 100k in areas.
 
The highest area locally is around 450 per 100k, but I assume that's as a result of being tier 3 (well, other than that one week of tier 2).

Our Nightingale hospital never admitted a single COVID patient, but started providing extra capacity to the eye hospital and children's hospital at the end of November.

Reading this six months ago would have given me a huge emotional reaction but I swear my brain now just disassociates to survive mentally. In the last week of the term I remember at one point just laughing at the number of times a child came up to me to tell me something because they forgot the rule to stay in their seat and it was Christmas activities and they were excited, it was more a laugh of just hopeless despair. It's not even me I'm worried about - if I pass it on to my fiance and something happens to him, that's my greatest fear. I hate this government so much that it's almost too big of a pandora's box to open.

Is he in a vulnerable group, or is it more just because you're working in the environment you are and he's working from home?

Mr L often comments on him being at home all the time but me being on public transport and then working in health centres. Although I'm sure they are a lot more controlled than schools. Or supermarkets. Or shops.
 
This all makes me rethink how I think about getting sick in general. I've never wanted to get the flu, but I also never really worried about the implications of spreading it. Same with colds/viruses etc. None of those are as deadly as COVID, but spreading any kind of disease can still lead to other's getting very sick/dying. I hope this leads everyone to reconsider going into work/school/public while sick at all

Yes, it's something I've considered whenever I've been seeing all the 'extra' cleaning going on of handrails, door handles in shops etc.

Yeah. It looked good putting all that capacity together but there was no-one to staff it because of the large numbers of medical staff leaving the UK due to uncertainty surrounding Brexit and, indeed, the increasingly hostile and racist culture re: immigration.

If it wasn't so utterly horrifying and the disease so indiscriminate, there would be something about every seed the Tories have sown in the last 10 years bearing its awful crop. But such as it is, it can only reasonably be viewed as a humanitarian crisis.
