This still just isn't hitting the same spots as Folklore pour moi. Don't know whether to continue being patient or just admit defeat that she is not 'that bitch'.

this is exactly how I’m feeling about it (down to the songs that are the take always). I went for a high walk and listened to it, which I thought would work, but it still didn’t
 
Maybe you guys ODed on folklore and now you’re full up. tbh I’m finding it much more consistent across the board. Perhaps the highs aren’t quite as high, but I think it’s just as cohesive an album as folklore. And I skip less songs.

dorothea is amazing much in the same way betty is, but it feels more immediate in being more obviously connected to Taylor’s own life story despite clearly being a fictional song.
 
yeah i think it's a better album than folklore to be honest. every song is somewhere between very good and great.
 
Physical copies have landed in the UK. Scored one today. Definitely a less immediate record than "folklore" - it's like the 2nd half of that album, expended upon. Will spend time with this before getting into scoring etc.

It's very much a "winter afternoon alone on the couch with a book" album for me. I adore it though.

after her ridiculous strategies, it was pretty much a given :disco:

Since selling different variations of the same song count as sales towards the original version, she has taken it upon herself to shamelessly release countless editions. It started with the "dancing witch version" on December 13th (for "her birthday"), which was followed by the acoustic "lonely witch version" on December 14th, and when she was on Jimmy Kimmel she announced a synth-driven third "moonlit witch version"

With the "new" "versions" come a behind the scenes of the music video, and a look at the storyboard, each of which has the song playing in the background which of course, counts as a stream of the song.

Last night to celebrate the final 31 hours of the tracking week (seriously lmao) she released more versions:

So if you already purchased the dancing witch version and the lonely witch version earlier in the week, you have to purchase them again (which, of course, counts for an additional sale). She also made sure to take a page out of the Born This Way playbook and heavily discount each version.

"Willow" is probably the most instant but least rewarding track on the album for me. I've downgraded it to a 6!

"Champagne Problems" is today's grower. The lyrics are devastating.

In the US she has 7 but outside of the 1989 trio they aren't indicative of her culture slaying hit making prowess...

Agreed that her sole UK #1 is a bit unfortunate. I think “Cardigan” ended up having a respectable run at radio, sales, streams etc that its #1 distinction isn’t too jarring. It was manipulated for sure, but it’s the same thing Mariah etc did 20-30 years ago to score as many #1s as she did (no shade, I see no issue with these tactics).

I suspect “willow” will rebound and enjoy a nice run as well.
 
I love cardigan and Willow as no 1s for sure, and it speaks fantastically to the cultural cache she’s enjoying in this moment. I guess it’s just a bit sad that to look at her no1s singularly you’d only be getting half the picture.

and looking at her full billboard history she has so many top 5s that stayed around for aeons but never managed the top spot. Fewming.

I can't think of one. It must be her most derided single?

She has 6 UK no1 albums tho, so she's a bit more latter day KYLIE ANN in terms of chart prowess over here.

Not quite the same stature but I did just think of Kelly Clarkson only having My Life Would Suck Without You... I imagine not one her best remembered in a Pointless answer kind of way...
 
On a long, slow winter afternoon, "evermore" clicks into place. It did feel like "folklore"'s b-sides on first pass; a decent collection but little that stood out immediately, unlike "folklore" which was obviously teeming with wonderful songs from the first spin. "evermore" needs the listener to be in melancholy, reflective mood but also to be willing to just sit with it, let it tell its stories. "happiness", "coney island" and "cowboy like me" are first ones to really come into full colour but I do feel like I've found the album's entrance now.
