lockdown extended to January 17th (as in closed businesses and schools/unis etc). I don't mind as such, except cinemas, but people are going out of their minds

I might have a job interview though which will have to be Skype. ugh you can't flirt on Skype!

I think that’s very common, my boss lives in Tower Hamlets (schools closed!) but the youngest daughter goes to school in the City of London (schools open!) and the oldest goes to school in Westminster (schools closed!)
 
over 2800 per 100,000 cases in my borough and schools are open. Just madness. I don't care what Tier I'm even in at that stage, I'm treating this as lockdown. There's really no need for me to go anywhere (which I realise is a lucky position to be in).
 
Ah no I read it wrong. 2859 cases in the seven days up to 27th Dec. 1160 cases per 100,000.

The highest is Havering where my family are, and that's at 2606 per 100,000.

Also: A friend has put on her insta story "did anyone else catch a sniffle over Christmas" and it's taking all my willpower to reply NO BECAUSE I DIDN'T GO ANYWHERE.
 
The Mirror's headline is pretty disingenuous then. The document says "It is not known whether measures with similar stringency and adherence as Spring, with both primary and secondary schools closed, would be sufficient to bring R below 1 in the presence of the new variant. The introduction of Tier 4 measures in England combined with the school holidays will be informative of the strength of measures required to control the new variant but analysis of this will not be possible until mid-January."
 
Just scrap these bloody mask exemptions. Honestly it’s utterly ridiculous. I just came back from my Sainsbury’s Local to pick up a few things and it sent me into a bit of an anxiety attack as one narrow aisle had 5 individuals all I’d estimate between the ages of 12-25 not wearing masks. Now what’s the likelihood of them all having some kind of legitimate exemption at their age?

And actually arrest people, there is a large % of the population who clearly don't care enough about other people to wear one, so things need to get stricter

I think if the government had actually listened to SAGE along the way then things would be a lot different. Everyone knew that schools shouldn't open just because it happened to be the month of September but they didn't listen. SAGE were suggesting delaying re-opening merely by two weeks in order to see a lot less catastrophe in December - TWO WEEKS

I am, of course, being a tad flippant. But you can't zeroise or minimise covid deaths without creating significant harm or deaths in other ways. It's not a zero sum game.

The correct thing to minimise deaths would have been to shut the schools down over autumn and winter. But that causes untold harm to a generation of children. There are no easy answers.

Everyone zooms in on the covid death tally because it's easy and quantifiable. There is so much more death and depravity that is going to be untold.

We'll never know the impact of things which didn't actually happen. Will it have had less catastrophe? Probably. Is it just delaying the inevitable by two weeks? Probably also.

ALL THAT BEING SAID, if we'd have gone harder sooner to start with, there'd be a lot less pain now. The government utterly fucked it up when people were willing to be compliant. That grace is now lost, sadly.
 
My grandad was due for his second dose this Friday but that does sound somewhat reassuring. I still can't help but think that they should just let the booked second Pfizer jabs go ahead and start with the longer gap going forward. It would save a whole lot of time in cancelling appointments and trying to schedule new ones at short notice to fill the spaces.

My GP friend was saying how they'll get a call at like 10pm saying to expect a delivery of 300 vaccines tomorrow morning at 9am. It's then a real struggle to get people booked in as most are elderly and don't have mobiles/ transport etc
 
Well Ontario's finance minister has just resigned after being caught on a two weeks' holiday in the Caribbean. While telling everyone else to stay home, we will get through this together, etc. :D And joining Zoom calls in a sweater in front of the fireplace, but there were palm trees round the back.
