My job has made me pretty good at wrapping parcels as I do it most days, but with presents I always make the mistake of buying terrible cheap paper that looks shitty no matter what you do with it :tongueout:
 
Debenhams dying is awful but unsurprising. Our local one was so ridiculously 90s it hurt- just terrible. It does leave Portsmouth entirely without a department store now as our John Lewis closed last year, despite being a profit making store- John Lewis felt the building they were in was too old and therefore “off brand”. Maybe they’ll take on Debenhams, which would be an ideal solution.

On a personal note, it means both my brother and sister in law have lost their retail jobs within 3 months of each other now, which is really fucking worrying for them with five kids, three still under their support. :(
 
My God I'd love John Lewis to move into .

We have Fenwick, so we're not without a department store.

Fenwick is brilliant. John Lewis came to Kingston just opposite the Bentalls department store around 1990/91 and everyone thought it would be the end for them. Still going strong and most people still prefer them just because the store layout is so much better than John Lewis.

As I've noted before in this thread, Fenwicks is pretty much indestructible. Privately owned by a family of super rich lunatics and they own all the property. I'm pretty sure they've been loss making for years but they couldn't give a shit and would rather keep people in work.

It's ridiculously overpriced, but it's really fucking lovely. They took over a beloved local department store that had been there since forever, demolished the shitty old 60s building, which dominated the High Street and replaced it with a lovely shiny glass-fronted beauty :disco:

I believe they shed quite a few jobs this year, but 2020 is the bizarre exception to every rule.
 
It looks like Bonmarche has finally succumbed as well. My mother will be gutted.

They do a lovely Christmas range of sparkly reindeer every year. I suspect it's hard to sustain however hundred shops on selling those to teenage girls and homosexuals, though.
 
What I noted about Paperchase when all the shops were shut was just HOW bad their online card range was considering they’re a fucking card shop!

Literally one per category. WTF.

I once slept with a guy and the morning after he told me he worked at a Scribbler, I just found it the STRANGEST THING.
 
Card Factory is ONLY good for grabbing any old shit in bulk to keep by your desk in case it’s anyone’s birthday in the office who no one actually likes enough to do anything thoughtful, but we have to at least pretend.
 
Having to bulk buy cards for office birthdays just makes me glad I'm rarely in one.

Debenhams going online only does seem logical. They had huge department stores, but I swear about 50% of stuff on their website was online exclusives anyway. On the occasions I would go in looking for something the staff would consistently direct you to the website when they didn't have something, instead of offering to order it in store like a normal customer service assistant (i.e. John Lewis staff) would do.
 
The Debenhams in Glasgow is massive. I cannot see who would fill that space. Or what it means for the businesses who use the ground floor units. Mind you, that includes Topshop and HMV so the problem might solve itself. :(

Terrible to think of just how many jobs will go between Debenhams and Arcadia, and the massive holes in high streets and town centres. Not so surprised that Debenhams looks like ending up as a smaller online brand but I thought there might still be some value in Topshop at least as a bricks and mortar chain. I guess things really have moved on more quickly.
 
There were 800,000 redundancies planned last year.

I’d expect we are in for worse once furlough inevitably ends and the lasting fallout from all of this becomes far more real. It’s going to be REALLY fucking tough.
