I saw the projections getting warmer and warmer on a scroll through Twitter this morning. The glee is unconcealed and rightly so.

Yes - she and her husband have a combined net worth of $800 million, according to Wikipedia.

Don’t get your hopes up. Most bills will require 60 votes (unless they go nuclear). But at least they will control what gets voted upon.
 
At least they can confirm his cabinet and any judges too. The republicans probably wouldn’t have done that
 
Can't they ditch the filibuster and change the rules on the supreme court now as well? Not that they'd have the balls to.

On the one hand I wish he would wait to not give the Republicans any ammo to criticize, but on the other hand he has clearly won and the Republicans will criticize and argue anything in bad faith so who cares

I think they technically can (I could be wrong) but they certainly won't, given the slim majority and some of the moderate members (Manchin, Sinema)
 
West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin could be a name you hear a lot over the next two years. He's an outspokenly pro-gun Democrat who voted with Trump more than any other Dem in Congress.
 
The Manchin-Sinema-Collins-Murkowski-Romney "moderate" block is going to have a lot of power

Oh this was lovely news to wake up to this morning and a welcome change - usually it’s the left looking good and then falling on the day, this time they pulled through against the odds.

it’s a further indictment and rejection of Trumpism, though whether it has any long term impact on a Republican rebrand remains to be seen

@Phoenix I think this is as close to a rejection that we're going to get in the US in 2021. People are so divided.

The 2016 Senate race in GA was 54-41, so this swing and increased turnout KIND OF is a rejection of the Republican Party. And Georgia isn't going back. The Atlanta suburbs are Democrat now
 
The way the black vote has been empowered, arguably even moreso than in the Obama era, is almost certainly going to be looked back on as one of the most profound cultural shifts of this era.

We'll see in the next few election cycles to what extent it holds without the spectre of a white supremacist in the White House, but I can't imagine many of them going back to being regular non-voters now they've been brought into the process so successfully.
 
The counting of the electoral college votes begins in about 40 mins.

In the meantime, Biden is expected to nominate Judge Merrick Garland as Attorney General (safe in the knowledge that Garland, and his replacement on the court, can now get through the senate).
 
This is quite a symbolic shift in power despite the core Trump movement still throwing tantrums and making noise. I hope we see plenty of coverage of far right republicans losing their shit over the coming months with what Biden and his administration will now impose
