inspired by the chat about Britney's regularly awful artwork.

I'll have to have a think about this - a lot of the big pop girls often have terrible album covers. I think to qualify for this discussion they need AT LEAST 50% and/or a minimum of 5 great album covers.

I would say Kylie has had 5 (KM94, Impossible Princess, Light Years, Fever, Aphrodite, plus Ultimate Kylie if that counts). bonus points for 4 in a row.

NOMINATE!

I might actually have meant Blood on the Dancefloor. The one with the red suit.

I like all of Lana Del Rey's album covers:

1. Born to Die
2. Paradise
3. Norman Fucking Rockwell
4. Ultraviolence
5. Honeymoon

Lust for Life is OK

The top two are passable attempts for 2006. But the bottom 2 are SHAMEFUL. To think these are probably still on some CD shelves. :D

The font in the bottom right makes me want to DIE

Lust for Life is one of my favourite LDR album covers! Smiley Lana :)

I like it as an homage to the Iggy Pop album cover of the same name (he is also smiling). But it feels a bit UN-Lana, which is perhaps its appeal to some.

The concept is awful but the execution/font/etc is WORSE

I think The Visitors is the only properly good Abba album cover. But fuck me it's TERRIFIC.

All of Rihanna's are very good aside from the basic debut artwork. Loud is my favorite.

I actually think the concept is GREAT. Like, can you imagine if she'd commissioned some gaudy '80s style painting of herself - half-woman, half-motorcycle - for the cover? It could be exactly the right kind of ridiculous, but instead we got that MS Paint monstrosity.

Speaking of gaudy illustrations, I've always liked the cover for Courtney Love's greatest shame (after Steve Coogan), America's Sweetheart.

Hole's Live Through This and Celebrity Skin are pretty great too.

The Didi Pickles of Eurodance Gina G scored so high there was no point on a 2nd album anyway (although I guess even album #3 was technically released). I do like that she randomly bumped into her album cover photographer David LaChapelle in LA and went for a random Startbucks catch-up ("tell me more about that tenant going through your underwear drawer Gina, that sounds terrifying" / "strewth Dave, if he wanted to get fresh I guess he came to the right place"). Anyway, the image I have is very Val and Mickey having a bite to hear the Room and Bored ratings. If only she'd leak the rest of the 2005 sessions - she slotted in between the likes of Dannii and Jenny Frost very well indeed even if the delirium of her vintage 90s dance mania wasn't the fuel anymore.

I also love Tori's early covers - Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink, Boys for Pele and From the Choirgirl Hotel are all unique and fantastic in their own way.
Her first 4 album covers were brilliant. WTF was Venus was followed by a panic attack visual diarrhoea of 12 covers for Strange Little Girls. Scarlet was fantastique of course, but everything since that has been rubbish.

Well at least Midwinter Graces has comic appeal!

I always pair this cover with this one in my head. I’m not saying either are good, they just make me think something unfortunate happened.
