What was the best thing that happened to you in 2020? Getting a lot healthier, being able to work again.

What was the worst thing that happened to you in 2020? 7 weeks in hospital, 4 surgeries, not getting visitors for 6 weeks due to COVID restrictions.

Have you tried to reduce anything in 2020? I've tried to get less worked up and angry about little things. And I do feel like I'm a more even-keeled person than I was 12 months ago - though the bar wasn't very high.

What would you like to achieve in 2021? Get physically close to where I was maybe 3 years ago.

What made you smile the most during 2020? My friends. Mainly cause I've put effort into caring for myself and for them again after being consumed with work for 3-4 years.

What took you by surprise in 2020? My own resilience.

Do you have more money this year than you did last year? Bizarrely enough, I think I do.

Were you happier at the end of 2020 than you were at the end of 2019? Yes. Though I spent a lot of 2020 feeling worse than I did at the end of 2019.

What was the nicest thing someone did for you this year? My friends from school driving 400 miles to come visit me when I was still in pretty poor shape.

Do you have any habits you want to change, cultivate or get rid of in 2021? Maintain a better work-life balance. Read more, study more. Challenge my brain and my body.

One thing you're looking forward to in 2021 that ISN'T the vaccine/society reopening - my mum retiring and her not stressing about work anymore and getting everything she wants and deserves for the rest of her life.

Not being able to go out as much, not seeing all the people I wanted to.

Kind of. My personal life feels a bit more stable but there’s still at least a few more really shit months to get through.

Exercise more/eat healthy but make it a habit and not something I’d just do on a Monday morning

James Acaster (in general), The Bugle (especially Alice Fraser), Frankie Boyle's New World Order and Katherine Ryan's "The Duchess" (oh, and Colston going in the drink; that felt like a genuine moment of people power and I smiled a lot that day).

The genuinely astonishing number of people who are both stupid AND selfish.

See "What made you smile the most" and add Sara Pascoe's "Out Of Her Mind". I know it was ostensibly a comedy but it was actually profoundly moving; a series set inside the fourth wall that takes until its devastating final episode to reveal why)

Were you happier at the end of 2020 than you were at the end of 2019?
Only insofar as I find it easier to be grateful for what I have and that brings a different kind of contentment. Also, I absolutely BOSSED IT at work and my reputation has never been better in there.

What was the nicest thing someone did for you this year?
Recommended me for something I really enjoyed but would never have got to do otherwise.

Be more active. Like most people, that's been a struggle but I've started.

What was your favourite music related thing over the past year? (song/album/artist etc): Annie's new album is a dreampop joy. Like all the gays with taste I also stanned Jessie Ware's album. Kylie obviously had a very good year. Steps had a strong album too.

What were your favourite CULTURAL things in 2020? (TV/cinema/whatever): Parasite and The Lighthouse were probably my favourite films. On TV, I belatedly binged (and loved) Succession.

Were you happier at the end of 2020 than you were at the end of 2019? Very much so. 2019 was not a good year at all in retrospect.

What was the nicest thing someone did for you this year? My closest real life friends being very much there for me during lockdown in terms of forming a bubble and ensuring I didn't just retreat into myself for the whole year.

What was the best thing that happened to you in 2020? After a few years as a lodger, and in run-down shared houses, I finally moved into a one bed flat, and THANK FUCK FOR THAT. I like having a kitchen to myself. (the BF kindly only uses it to make cups of tea and do the washing up )

What was the worst thing that happened to you in 2020? I was having a pretty stressful time at work around February, and obviously the constant anxiety about loved ones has been a lowlight.

What would you like to achieve in 2021? (can be one or many things) I'd like to be a bit more sociable (if I'm ALLOWED) and to get some hobbies (if I'm ALLOWED)

What made you smile the most during 2020? When my manager told me Boris Johnson had coronavirus on a work call <3

Do you have more money this year than you did last year? YES! I spent about three years in my overdraft, and a combination of getting a promotion at the end of last year, and not being able to do anything means I actually have a couple of thousand pounds to my name nowadays. What were your favourite CULTURAL things in 2020? (TV/cinema/whatever) I enjoyed the National Theatre stream of Gillian Anderson in Streetcar, I also enjoyed the latest season of The Crown. In summary, Gillian Anderson.

Were you happier at the end of 2020 than you were at the end of 2019? No. The reasons are very much out of my control, so I don't feel too bad about it. I look forward to being in a place where I can be more proactive about things.

What was the nicest thing someone did for you this year? My friend invited me to stay with him in Amsterdam, so that was nice, and looking back, I'm glad I squeezed in a long weekend abroad before the never ending lockdown.

What was the best thing that happened to you in 2020?
A few things -
1. Really making huge strides forward with therapy and learning so much about myself
2. Taking a step back from everyday life has allowed me to slow down and come to certain realisations about life, particularly my gender identity, that would have taken far longer without this time/space
3. Somehow having the foresight to take two amazing trips in February, including going to Melodifestivalen for the first time
4.I don’t appreciate this enough but the sheer dumb luck of getting the first job I interviewed for. My contract at my old place was up in October and my interview was on 13 March - literally the last day my organisation were in the office.

What was the worst thing that happened to you in 2020?
In all honesty, I feel like i’ve regressed in some ways? I am worried about my social skllls and restarting my romantic life after all of this - particularly when I am feeling very different about my gender and sexuality than before the pandemic so it’s not simply the case of picking up where I left off.

Have you tried to reduce anything in 2020?
I think thanks to my counselling, I have made some strides to reduce some of my more damaging behaviours. I have actually found my anxiety has gone down LOADS because I’ve been more in touch with what is really bothering me.

What would you like to achieve in 2021? (can be one or many things)
- Go to counselling to proper discuss things around my gender identity and potentially begin medical transition if that is what I decide I want to do
- Explore potential diagnosis of ADD
- Try and get back to pre-pandemic levels of fitness

What made you smile the most during 2020?
Probably my regular Thursday Eurovision-related online watchalong parties.

What took you by surprise in 2020?
My ability to cope with anything as long as I know that there will be an end to it eventually.

Yes, but only because I stayed at my mum and dad’s from mid March until late August and saved a bunch as a result. New job involved a slight pay cut though.

If podcasts count, You’re Wrong About and it’s sister podcast Maintenance Phase and the fantastic Big Brother recap podcast Please Do Not Swear have basically got my through this year... especially when i’ve been having a hard day or feeling lonely.

I honestly think YES. I’m not doing great but the trauma of a break-up weighed very heavily on the second half of 2019 for me and I was pretty miserable for reasons that weren’t the pandemic. Whereas THIS YEAR, I’m mostly miserable because of the pandemic (and how much of a transphobic hellscape the UK is but HEY)

What was the nicest thing someone did for you this year?
My parents put up with me for five months, which was nice? Also my friend went halfsies on the cost of a COVID test in August so I could visit and stay with them in Oxford.

Do you have any habits you want to change, cultivate or get rid of in 2021?
I have been SHOCKING with money over the last few months and I want to develop spending habits that are more sustainable in the longer term.

One thing you're looking forward to in 2021 that ISN'T the vaccine/society reopening
I don’t know if this counts but Eurovision happening no matter what is up there. I feel like other stuff is inextricably linked to the pandy or has been mentioned already. I want to see my friends who don’t live in London!

Rate 2020 out of 10 PERSONALLY (obviously it was shit for everyone overall)
7 or so, I'd say. Some ups and downs, but I was lucky enough not to be TOO personally affected by the virus and have had a lot of support from here and elsewhere.

What was the best thing that happened to you in 2020?
Getting to have a week abroad with my boyfriend back in February, which had been planned for a while and ended up being quite lucky timing as it was a couple of weeks before any of the serious talk of locking down was happening (whether it SHOULD have been is another question, of course).

What was the worst thing that happened to you in 2020?
I've definitely had periods of DARK MOODS, which I normally try and disguise or avoid dealing with which isn't too healthy I know. I also feel like I've been learning the hard way that grief is something that stays with you, even when you think it's gone.

Have you tried to reduce anything in 2020?
Not really, but I did join in the intermittent fasting trend and have mostly managed to keep it up. I'll see results from it any day now, I'm sure!

What would you like to achieve in 2021? (can be one or many things)
I think it's time to start properly looking for another job, though I'm aware I say that every year

What made you smile the most during 2020?
Honestly? Probably the Moopyvision Karaoke contests, and seeing the live reactions to the various shows and results. I can't really overstate how fun all of that has been for me to do!

What took you by surprise in 2020?
Discovering that someone I've posted alongside here for years was IN FACT my one-time online confidant and teenage gay crush from literally twenty years ago on a completely different corner of the internet

Do you have more money this year than you did last year?
I probably do, as I've been getting a lift from a colleague (and chipping in for petrol) which has been cheaper than the bus passes I would normally have to buy.

Your favourite Moopy poster(s) 2020?
Most of the people here have contributed to helping me get through 2020 in some way or another, but I have to give @Zu-Klara a special mention for that very particular brand of DEMENTED that's continued to be just the ticket for me this year, as ever. Also Giraffe I SUPPOSE

What was your favourite music related thing over the past year? (song/album/artist etc)
There's been a lot, but probably the Rina Sawayama album.

What were your favourite CULTURAL things in 2020? (TV/cinema/whatever)
Final Fantasy VII Remake probably, and OLD EUROVISIONS of course.

Were you happier at the end of 2020 than you were at the end of 2019?
I always find that sort of thing hard to answer (mainly because I have a crap memory for how I was feeling at a particular time), but I think on the whole YES.

What was the nicest thing someone did for you this year?
It's going to sound sappy, but the nicest thing someone did for me this year was to just BE THERE and support me, because I honestly don't know what I'd have done without it.

Do you have any habits you want to change, cultivate or get rid of in 2021?
It's another one I always say, but I really do need to get more active (even if it's just getting back into LONG WALKS once the weather's slightly nicer).
