I think if there's one thing I can critique this album for it's that the first 5-6 songs are so LASER FOCUSED that the kind of grab bag of sounds that follows from Funky Big Band onwards makes the back half feel like it has much less of an identity. when I think of this album's "sound" I just think of the big bangers. it didn't construct as much of a sound for the mellower tracks.

Velvet Rope fixes this somewhat...
 
Where Are You Now has a nice little build up and it's a pleasant tune with such a nice bridge. It just doesn't need to be so long.
 
I love "Where Are You Now", it's giving me classic 70s soul pop vibes. But it doesn't need to be SIX MINUTES
 
I really like Where Are You Now?, but concede it's slight. I think it would have been another hit, though. I can imagine a stonking Morales mix too...
 
Where Are You Now is definitely one of her better SCHMALTZ BALLADS. it helps that she's properly singing rather than murmuring, as on the many hundreds of later attempts during the 00s.

But the "sound" of those first 5-6 songs is so VARIED as well that that doesn't actually make sense...TTWLG, If, Throb- all have ridiculously different sounds. The whole album is varied.

I agree. I think the album is varied but still very cohesive if that makes sense - credit to the producers. It's part of its appeal and surely one of the reasons why it did so well.

they are varied but clearly all belong together on the same project. but you can't say that about If / Funky Big Band / The Body That Loves You together, for instance.
 
"The Body That Loves You" is one I always skip. It's like a GOOD AMBIEN
 
I've got through a whole David Attenborough documentary in the time this has been on. I wasn't anticipating OVER AN HOUR. Really struggling to care now.
 
'The Body That Loves You' has traditionally always been my least favourite track on the album.

However, I'm loving its quasi-tropical vibes and getting some serious holiday feels to it tonight. Maybe it's lockdown...

I actually disagree. If you knew her earlier albums when you first listened to janet. (particularly RN1814), she follows pretty much the same formula.
 
The Body That Loves You is kind of tedious. a definite nadir, saved of being totally uninteresting only by a few enjoyable production flourishes.

it does get better as it goes on, but maybe that's just the SICK MASOCHIST in me. *lipsyncs Discipline to daddy*

Did R Kelly produce "Anytime Anytime" or just the (somewhat superior) remix ?
 
My CD copy is the one where Whoops Now is 'hidden' several minutes after the end. I don't even think I discovered it until months later.
 
Any Time, Any Place is almost an 11/10. It would be if If hadn't been on the tracklist. Too good.
 
The album version of 'Any Time, Any Place' is *chef's kiss*

That being said I loved the radio version too & of course the video *straddles*
 
It fucking DRIPS sex in an effortless way she could only dream of when she was SQUELCHING her way through later albums.
