She still had little hints of her old Kids From Fame type voice before where she sounded like a little girl. I can't stand her voice on Love Will Never Do, and Black Cat while a great song doesn't sound like it's natural.

Jam & Lewis applied so many unique techniques with her voice in the studio (although the layering of vocals to harmonise with herself was straight from Michael's book), I just think it all came together perfectly for 'Janet' where they were able to bring her voice out better in the song mixes.
 
Oh how we used to giggle at the moaning interlude in 'Throb' everytime we played our CASSETTES of janet.

But that was her styling rather than an inability to sing, which was my point...

Let's face it, she wasn't Whitney, but she wasn't Paula Abdul either. She could certainly carry a tune and could even BELT a bit in her early career. Not sure where it entirely went wrong...

I've always liked 'What'll I Do'. Yes it feels jarring perhaps as it's a decidedly abrupt genre shift but it works. It was a double A with 'Whoops Now' wasn't it? Always thought radio would flip it but clearly we liked 'Whoops SHIT' as a nation didn't we..
 
I always overlook "What'll I Do". It's not essential, but such a different side of her and VERY mid-90s. And FULL VOICE again.
 
This is a touch on the cheesy side of things. I'm less enamoured. Still cute though.

Shocking that she nabbed a songwriting credit on this one all things CONSIDERED:

 
What'll I Do is such an essential breather. really well timed placement after that very breathless run of dark, grimy, mechanical bangers - and here's this song that radiates sunny vibes and carefree energy. it's a total 180 but it works such a treat. and what a fantastic throwback track - love the way it's just cruising on joy by the end, repeating the chant over and over.

I think they were surprised by "Whoops Now"- they tossed it out without a video as they thought everyone would have the album by now, but with "What'll I Do" on the flip, expecting that to be the eventual "lead". Never happened- the UK liked the novelty song. QUELLE SURPRISE. Cheapo video made and it became a sizeable hit. The US never bothered- I think What'll I Do was released to radio there but not commercially from memory.

Is that right? Wikipedia suggests she doesn't have a writing credit on it...I don't remember what it was at the time, but I always thought/knew it was a cover.

I can't understand a WORD of the verses on "Funky Big Band".
 
Back in the groove for 'Big Funky Band' - never been one of my big faves and I always think of it as a little sister to 'You Want This' (which is probably unfair).

Listening to this again now, it's another banger really. Probably could have been a single and would have easily gone top 20 in the US or even top 10 with a hype video..
 
I like "Funky Big Band" but feel it goes on a bit. Could've also worked as a two minute interlude, particularly the intro.
 
Funky Big Band is the first thing here that feels a touch more dated to me. and it's now quite fleshed out enough as a song to justify the 5min+ runtime. but I do love the subtle doo-wop vibe and the tinkly jazz piano.

Funky Big Band and New Agenda are, as I said earlier, where the album sags for me, but it picks up at the end.
