Well the South African variant is everywhere. This postcode announcement is political bullshit given that only 5-10% of tested cases get sequenced..

When are we getting a really deadly string that could kill us all and be done with it?

I've said it before in this thread I think but we're lucky the mortality rate of this virus is actually quite low, if this was a 1 in 3 dead scenario and the virus transmitted in the same sort of way I think a good chunk of the global population would have been wiped out by then.

The world would probably be a better place without a third of the population, it would just be the wrong third to die and we’d be left with anti-maskers and Rita Ora.

The Kent variant has LEVELLED UP and the immune system and vaccines may be less effective against it. YAY.

Yes, but on the other hand, people would have been a lot more careful. The problem with Covid is that people aren’t afraid of catching it.

Actually, is that even about vaccines at all? That's about drugs used to combat people in hospital with those variants is it not?

I'm no expert on the subject so you tell me, I don't WANT to be all doom and gloom. I'm just depressed from feeling like there's finally light at the end of the tunnel only to be inundated with "new variant y" and "mutant x" headlines, as if being kicked back down to the ground where we belong.

It's probably just the media being scare mongering clickbaiting arseholes, but without a better source who knows?

Part 24 here does make the distinction between treatment and vaccination based antibodies and is somewhat more reassuring than the grauniad.

Speaking of being kept under the thumb by the press, I wonder how long before the same "don't get excited for the summer, it spreads just as badly as it does in winter" headlines as last year will start, before we get back around to "brace yourselves, winter is coming and it'll spread like crazy"

Hopefully it does just die off by the summer and we don't get in that loop again

Stupid comment of the day award goes to "you turning into a hippie cloud?"

No, random-ass manager,

1) my hair is long because there's this virus you may have heard of and in the brief time the barbers were open my personal risk assessment was that I'm happy enough growing it out for now all things considered

2) maybe I have come to like it long and don't need weird remarks about my appearance?

I’m a few miles from one of the SA strain outbreaks. Expecting a knock on the door any minute

Also starting to get riled (why I waste energy on it I don’t know) at the MUTANT headlines in the newspapers. Is there no consideration for people’s mental health at all? The way the media spouts about everyone needing to look after themselves and isn’t The Great British Public wonderful and resilient etc and in the same breath feeding everyone soundbites designed to raise anxiety and stoke fear and disinformation.

I know we should be surprised but the sheer hypocrisy of it all...

I'm just surprised there's been no reports of mutations in the USA yet considering how riddled they are.

the always reliable Atlanta subreddit is reporting that the British and South African strains are almost here (or already are here) and that we will all be dead by the end of March
