2021 Rock n Roll HoF Nominees (including Kate Bush, Mary J Blige and Tina Turner)

As expected it's a female heavy list, the Hall has a lot of catching up to do.

There were rumours Mariah might get nominated this year after Whitney was inducted last year. But she appears to be have been nixed by 90s critical fave Mary J Blige.

Jay-Z, Iron Maiden and The Go-Gos also nominated for the first time

Chaka Khan and Kate Bush are back after multiple attempts. If Tina Turner gets in, she will be the second two-time female inductee after Stevie Nicks; Carole King would also be a two time winner although she is only previously in as a songwriter.

No Eurythmics again and nothing for Chic again, which is now becoming a bit of a joke.

The 5 currently winning the fan vote are Fela Kuti (by a healthy margin), Tina Turner, The Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden and Carole King. I do expect all of them to be inducted. I'd go with Jay-Z and Rage Against The Machine as the others. MAYBE Chaka Khan at a push. Kate Bush is last in the fan vote but they only make up a portion of the final ballot.

I think it's very US-centric, and Kate has more of a cult following over there than here where she is, of course, a national treasure. That said, the members of the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame are also very US-centric so she's probably not got a hope in hell of getting in

I'm surprised Carole King and Tina Turner aren't in there already. They really do pay women DUST.

It is completely an American HoF but it doesn’t ignore international success entirely - it’s one of the key indicators (the most prominent being historical influence). British acts who have only had mild success in the US have made it in before, including The Cure and Roxy Music in recent years, and there’s always speculation that The Smiths will make it in one day and probably, eventually, Oasis. Kate is very well respected among the global music press. But it is probably her lack of mainstream awareness holding her back.

the fan voting however is very international and is usually energised by fan sites and online communities running campaigns (Fela Kuti leading for example, something is clearly going on there to get that much support).

Tina Turner was inducted very early on, as Ike & Tina. But there’s been a long campaign to get her in as a solo - it is harder to get in once you’ve gone in before as the committee tends to give others a shot... not unlike the Oscar voting. But there’s no excuse any more with so many male solo artists in twice and sometimes 3 times. And her solo career was much more successful.

the thing holding Tina back is that she was only huge for a few years in the 80s in the US. If they recognise the fact that she is one of the biggest selling artists ever internationally and remained successful well into the 21C, she’ll get in.

When you look at some of the male multiple inductees, it makes no sense how Tina Turner has been so long snubbed as a solo artist. Eric Clapton being in there 3 times is a bit silly. I mean Cream were good and all but they weren’t even active as a band for that long, same for the members of Buffalo Springfield. Some of the early influential bands that were inducted right away are also only really known for 2-3 songs. The bar just keeps being raised for women.

I agree, although for years the HoF was the same as all the other music outlets, and catered to middle aged white men. They were supportive of the black music pioneers in soul and jazz and funk and the likes of Bob Marley but that’s about it. They’ve really changed in the last 5 or so years but they have an awful lot of catching up to do. Tina Turner being in for the band and not as solo is just crazy. Yeah the band comes first but it’s time to catch up.

interesting choices this year, in that they didn’t pull an Oscars and ignore those that have been inducted before (Tina as Ike & Tina and Carole as a songwriter not a performer). They both deserve to get in. Shame for Kate Bush and Mary J Blige but I think they were first time nominees and will get another shot. Feel bad for Chaka Khan though , this is about her 5th nominee...

Heavy Metal is one if the UK's most successful exports - invented by Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, refined (and welded to camp-as-tits cod-horror imagery) by Iron Maiden who somehow merged a prog-rock approach to the all-out assault of the likes of Motorhead and became one the more successful bands in the world.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t be in. There’s just a certain contingent of music fans that moan the loudest. It’s more the complaint that the Hall means nothing if my favourite band isn’t in, and hip-hop shouldn’t be in there, and things like that. Some fans think the Hall should cater to them only. I mean I don’t think Notorious BIG should be in there when A Tribe Called Quest isn’t, but it’s horses for courses!

He was. And Fela Kuti led the public vote the entire way and didn’t get in. So I’m not sure what use that vote is.

A pretty great set of inductees IMO, would’ve loved Iron Maiden or Kate Bush but I think they’ve done a decent job of representing different genres and I’m glad the male/female split is even

Kraftwerk are being given the “Early Influence Award” (I thought this was only for artists from the pre-rock era but I guess not), which is nice but they really deserve to be in the main performer category
