The Handmaid's Tale (TV Series)

I'm still trying to get to grips with the June Nick kiss before she was sent off to life in the breeding colony. Has he gotten so powerful that he can openly embrace her in full view of the guard waiting to drive her off? Or was she so close to the brink of insanity by that point that the whole scene was a figmant of her imagination?

I'm enjoying the season so far in spite of how ludicrous it is that she's STILL ALIVE. The third episode was traumatic but still drove the plot forward. I couldn't watch the part where they were about to pull her fingernails out (Blessed Be that it didn't come to that).

The highlight was the satisfaction of seeing June confront Lydia and exploit her weakness.

Excited to see Fred and Serena vs Rita.
 
It’s outrageous that a show this big doesn’t get shown day and date in the UK.

This episode was good although I really did have to suspend my disbelief in a big way for everything involving the
milk truck fiasco. June hoisting Janine up with one arm was particularly :D. She's invincible and she's also acquired super human strength.

The ending scenes were grim but helped to build up Janine as a stronger character, and I think maybe it could be empowering and interesting if the characters begin to utilise sex as strength, given that how it's been used throughout the series as a whole.

So I decided to catch up on season 3 cause 4 seems to be going in an interesting direction.

I’m almost halfway through and it seems to have lost any sense of it being a dictatorship, June is just talking back and being extremely forward and no one is batting an eye lid especially after the botched escape.

It’s not bad but it’s so heavy on monologues. Nowhere near as good as the first season.
 
I’ve not had the tiniest of interest in this, this really should have been a limited series, it’s just a slug to me at this point, NO LEGS.
 
They’re so enamored with those sweeping shots and grand compositions followed by close ups on Elizabeth Moss angry face that these moments no longer have any effect.
 
Could someone tag me if a U.K. airdate gets announced, I can’t read this thread as I don’t want to know anything about the new season!

speaking of commanders, just how big is Gilead supposed to be? sometimes it feels big, and other times it feels like it's just that committee of commanders in a re-purposed town hall. I mean, surely by now some DIVINE MESSIAH would've ordered the certain death of our Ofjoseph. but I guess that's cis-het incompetence for you!

Maybe she'll throttle Fred in his cell? Or pull out another fountain pen and stab him to death.

I have no doubt she'll have gotten bored of Canada and will be on her way back to dear Gilead in an episode or two though. Probably the season finale?

The Serena scene gave me chills and frustratingly I started feeling bad for her again which always seems to happen when I'm ready to commit to full Serena hatred. :angry:

This confuses me. We're told that Serena and Laurence were key figures in its creation and it's implied that they're the centre of it all, but then they popped to Washington last season and the crux of it seems to be that they're actually not that high up and there's a whole other city of commanders ahead of them.

The show really does evil female characters with multiple dimensions so well. Serena and Lydia are both brilliant in that they're so horrible but you can't help but have moments of feeling sorry for them.

it's very shoddy world building in that regard. I'd love if the show would explore the hierarchy of Gilead rather than just Ofjoseph running into the same, seemingly very forgetful, bunch of commanders

I'm sure there was a new map released recently! *googles*

There are definitely a lot of plot holes. Like the hysteria when a handmaid escapes, only to discover that there are actually hundreds and hundreds walking around Washington with their mouths stabled together. :(

But I suppose part of it is that they got through the book in the first season and a lot of since has been tying on new parts of the world to extend the series.
 
Omg this shit is making me so angry. I’m on episode 9 and beside all the pretentious voice over, why would they leave June with the pregnant Handmaid without any protection? And now the other Handmaid is just visiting.

This is the same Gilead where they couldn’t breath but now June goes on walks and does whatever the fuck she wants.
 
Finished season 3 and while some moments were good. I find the dialogue and the plotting to be weak af.

The little girl who goes “miss, is this the place where I can wear what I want” made me roll my eyes so hard. Also same girl who didn’t remember anything remembered her father all of a sudden.

Also the contrivances they went through to get June to stay....there was one fucking guard and she had a gun. Couldn’t she sneak up on him instead of all that show. It was one fucking guy.

Onwards towards season 4.
 
This show is a piece of shit. I just finished episode 3 which is an exercise in torture and misery porn and a lot of it falls on June’s shoulders (obviously Gilead is the big bad but she’s ready to die AFTER they’d been captured? Bitch you could have jumped off the roof and saved those poor Martha’s).

And then the kiss with Nick with the 360 camera as if it’s a romantic comedy :doublechin:

Let alone the ending, where June inexplicably again causes the death of those poor Handmaids when she could have killed Lydia and gave them more time to run. It’s all so cruel for the sake of cruelty.
 
Well i thought the last 2 episode were better, we really could have gone from the flight at the end of season 3 to this point and skipped all that unpleasantness.

I will absolutely yell if she goes back to Gilead at the end of the season.

C4 have announed that previous seasons have been added to 4oD and that the new season is coming "in June"

Nice of them to at least give us a MONTH :manson: but at least we now know that it's not going to be in 6 months or something

First episode is this Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4 according to what's on my Tivo recording series links.
 
So basically at the end of season 4 everybody's in the same place as they were at the end of season 3 except for

Fred. Fred's dead. Torn apart by harridans then strung up on a convenient Gileadan bridge.
Serena-Joy still in prison but now miraculously pregnant despite her womb being shot to pieces in the before-time
June now in Canada but can also pop to Gilead or arrange to give them a bell whenever she feels like

Aunt Lydia is going to team up with Nick and Joseph who are trying to bring down Gilead from the inside and will arrange for Janine and Esther to escape to Canada with Hannah, Serena-Joy has her baby and gives it to Janine before she is deported to Gilead and put to death because the other wife who visited had seen she'd been reading and writing
 
I think the ending was good and needed, if they hadn’t given June that conclusion then people would have been fuming, I’ve seen a few people grumbling that the show glamourises violence against women but the tables certainly turned.

I do keep getting the feeling Lydia will turn, and that constant ‘is he evil or good’ vibe from Jospeh HAS to be for something!

I was squealing when I realised what was about to happen! It was so good!

I don't know why but I've always felt Joseph was a secret goodie, usually when I think that about somebody in a film they turn it completely around with a surprise betrayal of epic proportions though.
 
Lord knows if I saw season 2, but I definitely missed 3. Anyway, I've been on 4 and onto episode 7. Quite liking the plot to take down Serena Joy. Didn't really like Offred basically roleplaying her rape onto the (ex?) partner. Perhaps it was the struggle to be intimate so I won't judge what I didn't understand.
 
I've got the season 4 climax on. Is Offred going to kill him? She was flickering wildly. Amazing to watch, I didn't think the actress had it in her. They really do need stronger bulbs.
