There’s no curfew in London but everyone seems predisposed to going home at midnight now. Which tbh I enjoy as it’s increasingly DIMINISHING RETURNS from then on.
 
Increasingly at this point thinking of it as a kids' pandemic. You'd think we'd be close to herd immunity but since we did it by age (probably rightly), we're facing the other edge of the sword now - herd immunity in the over 60s if not most of the adult population, whilst the schools are an absolute plague that is not going to get under control any time soon. Because herd immunity is based on who the herd is, and we keep talking in terms of the country as equals but in fact kids are a separate "herd". But as long as the groups don't mix massively (which is unlikely beyond families, put simply most 70 year olds don't hang out with kids especially now Jimmy Savile is gone) you'd think it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

The balanced version of my previous posts is that it's thankfully not looking to be 70% more transmissible than Alpha (which would've been absolute carnage based on the modelling by Warwick which had 50% as the worst case scenario and triggered my anxiety bigtime) but more like 40%. Which is still a problem and still forecast (but not guaranteed) to put the hospitals under strain if ignored, but one of the clever chappies on Reddit did some calculations that we'd only need a 2 week delay to the full "go batshit" reopening to avoid such a disaster. A disaster simply because not enough people are double-poked yet for a variant that one poke doesn't do much for, and when you add this up with "only" 90-95% prevention of hospitalisation still becomes a bit of a bother. But one that is easily handled with a small, tolerable (IMO) delay.
 
Yeah I mean delay for the final phase of re-opening. Those nightclubs are going to have to hang tight for another couple of weeks, I suspect...
At least there's no talk of needing to re-tighten. Even the most pro lockdown people aren't suggesting that.
 
Oh FOR CHRIST SAKES. ITV news headline is that the Delta variant is not only 60% more transmissible, but the vaccine may not work towards it. Then the main story doesn’t even mention the vaccine not working against the virus. FOR FUCK SAKE SHUT UP. :goodgrief:

publications are doing the same thing. I was fuming this morning. Headline was “vaccine less effective” and then the article said that one jab was about 17% less effective (meaning it’s still mostly effective) and it’s making little to no difference after 2 jabs.

for FUCKS SAKE British press. You’re the reason there’s so much chaos about the whole thing.
 
Slightly less effective for any kind of infection (including mild etc) meaning a very slight drop on the effect of "catch it and pass it on", which seems to be corrected after the 2nd dose, and it shouldn't make any difference for serious illness/death.

God, the media honestly. At least I have the excuse of anxiety when I go batshit, and don't scare people on purpose
 
Yes whenever a new variant emerges and we have no data yet on vaccine effectiveness the media goes straight to the ‘THE VACCINE MAY NOT WORK’ narrative, when of course it will take several weeks to ascertain whether that’s true.
 
You always have to watch the mays and mights in the media, they make good headlines and are based on nothing. They might not even include the words might or may.

"Hey mr government person, do you think we'll end up back under lockdown?"

"Well, we aren't able to rule anything out but-"

"Thank you mr government person"

"- but it's extremely unlikely that... hey where did you go?"

Headline: "Return to lockdown possible, according to government"
 
Question re: contact tracing, right so you check in a venue but you don’t check out… so how does it even know you were there at the same time as the person who tests positive? You might have left hours before they get there.

We were looking at our check-in history after @Iguana got pinged and it says we were in venues from when we checked in till 23:59 which obviously isn't right (sure the McDonald's was good, but we didn't stay all day and evening).

However on a separate bit it says the date of exposure which for him was a day he went into the office. Nothing to do with any of his check-ins, just that he'd stood near enough to someone who'd later tested positive. Could have been someone in the office, on the train, on the street, no way of knowing really.
 
The date of exposure was also five days before he got pinged and he'd been out a few times before then. :bruised: I guess it takes a few days for people to do their tests and register their results. Even then, you're still actually trusting people to do it!

All in all, no I don't really understand it.
 
Ohhh useful. I checked into one place on my ‘exposure date’ otherwise I’d been working from home. I was there for 2 hours but the app has timed me there from 6pm to midnight.

The boys I was with have also been told to isolate so it wasn’t who I actually met. It’s been over a week, I’ve no symptoms and have 2 negative tests under my belt (including a PCR test) but I still have to isolate for another 3 days. Le sigh.

I feel your pain, I'm in the exact same situation. And over this lovely weekend too!

I'm double vaxxed, have had Covid before and have two negative lateral flow tests from this week, but I still have to isolate (which is fine, just a little frustrating!)
 
Looks like any NHS app check-in automatically runs until 23:59. Apparently I was in a place I popped into for a lunchtime drink for 11 hours! (and sitting outside the whole time anyway, so what's the point?)
 
My friend’s brother got pinged by the Track and Trace all when he’d not really been anywhere. It turned out the positive test was his neighbour, despite having no contact with him but just living in the other side of a wall.
 
Definitely deemed over in the pub here. Loud live music, way too many people crowded around a table etc. Sat outside instead! Still had to get served at the bar as he draws the line at doing table service outside

That's always been a concern of mine; if it's just proximity-based via Bluetooth then what happens if you sleep with your phone next to your bed with an infected neighbour on the other side of the wall? It's ridiculous if it's sensitive enough to get pinged from that.
 
I'm seeing all these photos from the G7 summit and Biden/ The Queen. There's just no social distancing going on or mask wearing!

You weren't expecting the same rule for them as the rule for us, surely?

Anyway interesting times tomorrow. I'm betting on a month delay
 
I think review in a month is a good idea, but I don't expect the government to follow scientific advice
