Some are absolute trolls. Some are scarily real people. Look on their timeline how they descend into paranoid insanity over the years.
 
Hospitalisations going up 30% week on week, so I am assuming that things won’t be getting back to normal even though so many people have been vaccinated.
 
My above post was the main headline on ITV news, but other headlines I have read say Boris is thinking it’s looking good for Freedom Day in July.
 
Hospitalisations are still at 5% of the Winter peak and the people coming in tend to be younger and discharged more quickly than before so whilst not IDEAL, we’re not on the exponential path to catastrophe we were at in December.
 
It was always expected cases would rise as restrictions ease, but obviously just not as quickly as the Delta variant is spreading, I honestly can’t see them delaying the date any further at this point unless there’s a severe uptick in deaths which were not seeing yet even as the people in hospital creep up.

The epidemiologist said that with cases rising 30% week on week, and in turn hospitalisations and people in ICU going up week on week something has to be done to stop it going out of control again. She said it is inevitable with rising cases and illness, deaths will unfortunately rise over the coming weeks.
 
I understand vaccinations are helping and we are nowhere near the December peak, but it is still worrying when you hear an expert in the field say that.
 
My understanding is that hospitalisation is skewing towards younger people which, while obviously awful, implies that once they are vaccinated the rate of hospitalisation might slow. I heard this a little while ago though so it may be outdated now.
 
What’s happening in Bolton is quite promising. After they ramped up vaccinating a few weeks ago the infection rate has been dropping quite a bit, so much so that it only has the fifth highest rates in Greater Manchester
 
Is there any actual information on the ages of the people who have died and/or been hospitalised at the moment? I keep just seeing “young people” written under hospitalisations but nothing about deaths, and “young people” is very vague.

See, that’s not very helpful and with the media scaremongering, some details would be apppreciated. There’s a massive difference between a healthy 25 year old being hospitalised vs an obese, diabetic 60 year old.

I totally agree. I think they just keep going back to the old “we don’t have enough data to know for sure” line.

Boris was interviewed on ITV News and said that cases were going up roughly 30% week on week as well as hospitalisations and admissions to ICU but then when I googled it The Guardian goes with the headline quote from Boris saying that the freedom date in July looks good and likely to go ahead. The mind boggles.
 
It’s not like we’ve had any new information that would put it in jeopardy though. When they made the announcement last week they were very open about the probability that cases and hospitalisations will be higher in 4 weeks but we will still be in a much better position.

The theory, which I hope bears out, is that we shouldn’t need to clamp down in order for the numbers to flatten, peak and eventually decrease like we have done previously.
 
Hospitalisations going up 30% week on week is lower than the increase in positive cases as well, isn't it? If so, surely that's a good sign as well.

Do we know any figures on the uptake of the vaccine? Are the people refusing the vaccine a major minority?

Well we know that over 80% (and counting)have had a dose and that’s already higher than some estimates from before the roll-out started.

There are uptake figures by age bracket here and there but I don’t put too much stock in them while it’s ongoing among a particular group, as you can’t distinguish between someone who has refused and someone who hasn’t had it yet.

I think in the over-60s we’re on something like 95% or similar.

Yes but cases were going up by about 50-60% a couple of weeks ago and you’ve got to take the lag into account.

To put it another way, by the time we were averaging 10k daily new cases in the 2nd wave, we were seeing around 600 new hospitalisations each day. Now we’re seeing 200.
 
It was just that woman who put the willies up me ( :ken:) when she said no matter what happens now at this stage the hospitals will be overwhelmed again within the coming weeks.

Exactly. Right up until a few days before 14th June he was still saying he didn't see anything in the data that would delay it and we know how that played out

Also lots of talk about a “bumper day” for first jabs although yesterday’s England figures got lost down the back of the sofa so I suspect there’s some jiggery pokery going on with the numbers there in advance of the vaccines minister’s briefing in an hour.

Covid in UK made headlines here today, saying you had the highest number of cases since February. I want to believe this is mostly young people and it's not serious, right?

The curve isn’t good but yes it’s mostly young people and the hospitalisations going up very slowly shows that the length and severity of illness is now greatly reduced for most people. The vaccine is still working.

The bigger issue that should be concerning Europe is the fact that the delta variant has not yet become the norm on the continent, and the vaccine rate is much lower than the U.K. So you’ve all got a third wave coming, and most countries don’t seem to be doing anything about it. In fact a lot of counties have just been green lit for delta carrying Brits to hit your beaches. And so it goes on.
