Do you know I meant to post about them last week. We lost the central Gap Kids here about 5 years ago, Gap about 3 years ago, and both in Bath in the last year or so. That left only the one in the main out of town shopping centre, which changed to a Gap Outlet, but then when we were there last week, they had a closing down sale on, and were also selling off all fixtures and fittings.

In my 20s and 30s I probably bought more clothes there than anywhere else, and even until now they have been my first choice (well, brainless choice, I guess) for decent slim fit chinos for work in lovely colours, always in the sale.
 
I used to buy jeans from there a long time ago, but then they seemed to only concentrate on various skinny fits. I definitely just got too old for them.
 
I remember the very first thing I bought in Gap, in 1994. It was a grey marl polo neck, with horizontal black and white stripes. My mother kept going on about how poorly made it was because the stripes didn't match at the seams, but I loved it. I wore it with my pink levis and thought I was the ABSOLUTE TITS in it :disco:
 
Primark definitely killed Gap. Once you could get the same Tshirt/skirt/trousers in a thousand shades of grey brown and black, for a third of the price, Gap became useless to the high street.

I used to go to Uniqlo for that too as they were of better quality, but their range of colours has gone really downhill.
 
I may have wandered round one or two in the early 2000s but don't think I ever bought anything from Gap.

It really is going to end up with just Primark and maybe Next on the high streets and town centres at this rate though. I keep expecting to see River Island appear in this thread - they don't feel like an especially strong brand, though I guess Top Shop going may have done them a favour.

I like Uniqlo, but we don't have one here, and I find their sizing too inconsistent to trust them to buy online.
 
Are ANY high street clothes shops going to be left in the next year or so?
 
I can't talk about their women's clothing, but I've got a veritable rainbow of trousers from there.

I think it's always been overpriced. But they always seemed to have very quick turnover of stock, which seemed to result in permanent sales racks. Plus of course they seem to be stalwarts of pretty much every shopping outlet village.

Not convinced I've bought anything there full price since the 90s.

I would say that is absolutely spot on.
 
I had two Gap tops when I was a teenager that I liked. But it's 29 years since I was a teenager. Blame me. :(

I had my first ever job with RS McColl - paper round. £5.26 per week. Yes, I'm that old. Actual child labour.

I think my first paper round was £3 a week.

A 13 year old child out 5 mornings a week at 7am in all weathers, around some of the worst inner city areas. And my parents actively encouraged it :D
 
I think mine regretted it eventually because it meant I was up and about, knocking around the house from about 8-8.30, making a racket.
 
It frightens me how many shops are closing on the high st. Not because I use it much, but because of our own shop.

Which is the main reason we chose the town we did, it has hardly any of the big chains (apart from m&s and oddly, a Poundland.)

It's pretty much all small, local independent shops and cafes which makes me hopeful we will be ok.

Our main town Newport is absolutely dead with about 20 empty shops.
