I think there's something in that unfortunately. You only have to look at the way those type of people get free press these days. The left wing press need to stop catering to them. CNN talk about Trump more than anyone else, and the Independent are the same with the likes of Laurence Fox, and before that Katie Hopkins. They need to stop giving these horrors opportunities to build a brand.

On the other hand, I think social media has given people the opportunity to have their voice heard when pricks like this act like pricks. Think of all the truly hateful comedians of yore who had decades-long careers because it's much harder to get somebody cancelled by SNAIL MAIL.

But...again, Johnson has to be held responsible. His insistence on framing everything as a "war" and his constant use of the language surrounding armed conflict is what makes pricks like this think that "a war is coming".
