What is with Brambles being secluded from the audience too? Not the nicest intro for dropped from her record label Sonia either.
 
I see the bad decisions which led to its downfall began around about here. Diluting the impact of the charts was the was first death chime.
 
Just catching up. Three singles this episode I bought - Erasure, Lenny Kravitz and Divinyls. I wouldn't nave thought that would have been the case into the 90s.
 
I've watched a few lately. Dunno who allowed Electronic to play that terrible version of Get The Message but they dropped the next week so, hey ho. I'd forgotten how much I liked Dannii's "Success" and also how many random club hits were making the actual charts.
 
We can't be far from the live-vocals "real music" era now...a matter of a couple of months, surely.
 
I've hit the episodes where they bring back the full top 40 but shown over the top of a video. I had a feeling the abbreviated version didn't last so long.
 
What's with all the weird camera angles and green-screen shit? Definite awkward phase for TOTP here.
 
Yeah it's quite unpleasant to watch. 16 episodes of Bryan Adams upcoming. Did he ever make the studio?

Mr L was quite sure he didn't (I couldn't remember), but then he was in the studio for one episode - with a performance so dull they intercut it with scenes from the video anyway.
 
I assume Kevin Costner's arse has been edited out the video, which was the highlight of the whole package.

Aside from Alan Rickman obviously.
 
Dannii was such a regular TOTP attendee in 1991.

I fucking love Pandora's Box, the best OMD 90s single. Andy McCluskey's overactive arms present and correct.
 
Sophie Lawrence repeatedly winking to camera was a bit off-putting.

Winter in July is a wonderful song I had completely forgotten about.
 
I can't decide if this OMD song falls on the right side of camp trash or not.
 
I always had an irrational dislike of OMD. It seems to have stuck because I had to fast forward through them the other week. I couldn’t take it.
 
I loved them around Architecture And Morality period, but lost interest later in their career. I find Andy McCluskey very uncomfortable to watch. When it's moody synths I can handle it, but when he's playing pop/rock front man, it's distinctly awkward.
 
I know it's objectively terrible, but I do enjoy I'm Too Sexy. Worse, I like it ironically.

Ban me.
 
I skimmed through a few episodes recently and found nothing even worthy of remark - summer 1991 was NOT GOOD. No wonder the year is remembered for all the alt/indie albums.

But, at the same time, you can see why it happened. This revamp was a failure - the show looks weird and stilted with the presenter being kept away from the audience and even on a green screen at times. But I will maintain that the 'live vocals only' years killed the show. There's a whole treatise to be written around the arrival of cd:uk and the increasing proliferation of non-terrestrial television which, coupled with the wild acceleration of the charts in the late 90s, made the show obsolete but the problems really started with the real-music brigade wanting to make life hard for all the club acts who used sampled or cut-up vocals.

Excuse me darling but 1991 is remembered for the (commercial) peak of RAVE!

Although yes while there was something magical happening in dance music in 91, the charts had some real stinkers. I remember looking back at the NOW albums from this era expecting them to be amazing because of my own 91 memories, but wow, some of the songs… :zombie:

That song evokes hard memories for me. Wasn’t quite up there with the piano house stuff of the time but nothing quite screams 1991 like that anthem!
 
A lot of hot bangers atm... Rozalla doing The Perf Lite, Sabrina and an extraordinary dance version of Bridge Over Troubled Water I have never heard before.

I don't think I have ever heard that Bridge cover either. I do have Hannah's Almighty album, minus her sisters, with You Only Have to Say You Love Me on which is a bit of a tune.
 
Christ on a tricycle, Nicky Campbell was a cunt. A 'real music' jibe here, a 'lol at Metallica being a bit noisy' there...a professional wanker.
 
It's worth remembering that The Shamen were having their first major hit with "Move Any Mountain/Pro-Gen" a matter of weeks after founding member Will Sinnott died by drowning (days after the video was shot). The dissonance must have been overwhelming.
