Squid Game

Can't wait to see this. Watched the trailer on Netflix yesterday and immediately added it to my list.
 
The dubbing was debatable. Not sure whether something got lost in translation, but some of the dialogue was rather... hmm.

That said, I didn't give a shit. It was great fun, in the most horrendous way. Hunger Games meets Black Mirror meets every other dystopian horror, BUT IT'S IN KOREA.
 
I binged the whole lot the first week it was out. The acting is so good.

I found the last episode underwhelming though. Not sure why.

@lolly Quite bloody in places regularly.
 
Think I'll opt out then. I'll only be watching through half open fingers and shrieking melodramatically.

I watched the trailer but it seemed rather reminiscent of a shit American film I watched recently on someone’s advice, was it called Play or something?

I cant watch dubbing. I have to do subtitles.
 
Once I've done the last couple of episodes of Sex Education I think I will give this a go.
 
I'm on Episode 5 but, am I alone thinking the show is a tad problematic or is sexism just a common thing in SK? If you're a hardcore feminist you *might* not enjoy this show very much :shock:

I often have subtitles on because I'm a bit mutton, the subtitles on this don't match the dubbed words. I think they've worded the English dubbed script to match the length of Korean mouth-movement and the subtitles are really the translation. They're not completely different to what's being said but the subtitles make more sense.

I'm halfway through the second episode and it's just been gobbets of blood splattering and they aren't that realistic. Nothing proper gory as yet. This from a woman who's watched every episode of Call The Midwife but covers her eyes when a woman gives birth every episode (because that's what the show's about). It doesn't show bodyparts, just a splash of fluid past a thigh and then a slimy baby's head side-on :D
 
I’m about half way through this and finding it a bit of a slog. In terms of the death game subgenre it’s going for, it’s quite low tier for me. I get it’s essentially a Korean soap opera with added DEATH, but it’s so overly dramatic I lost investment in the story or characters.

I might stick it out because the premise is interesting and the production design is superb - but I will continue to fast forward through some of the *acting* scenes - I haven’t missed anything important so far.

Btw the dub is APPALLING.. you’ll get way more out of the subs even if you’re not predisposed to them.
 
About to overtake Bridgerton as the biggest ever Netflix show apparently.

I’m afraid this is very much an ongoing issue in South Korea at the moment.
 
I'd only do dubbing if they give comedy Eurotrash style accents.
 
Giving this a go but had to turn the dubbing off 5 minutes in (he sounded like Greg Brady).

I don’t think I have ever watched anything dubbed (I can’t even bear a dubbed advert for Bounty!). Netflix appears to turn it on automatically (at least for this show).
 
I caught a bit of the dubbed voices when ZG was watching this earlier - it honestly sounded like the sort of voice actors you got on C-grade anime shows in the Nineties. Netflix have clearly put plenty of money into marketing this show, I'm surprised they didn't spend more on doing a decent dub :shock:
 
I’m still AGOG that so many people are watching a Korean Netflix drama - is it just because it’s just got so much buzz now and it’s a bit of FOMO?

Either way, Diddy’s Asian Persuasion goes live on Sunday Lunchtime (in the uk)
 
Absolutely LOVED THIS, can totally see why it has been such a global success. Totally recommend watching it completely blind to anybody that hasn't watched already, as any spoilers really will ruin the tension of the whole show. Soapy, but compelling.
Will echo the misogyny that roams through the show however, I had to just EXCUSE IT.

As such I'm going to put some thoughts in spoilers
- The games are clearly the best part of the whole thing, with the Tug Of War and Glass Bridge really staying with me as they were just so BRUTAL and unfair. The walk up to the Tug Of War platforms, and the players slowly realising what they were about to do was absolutely HORRIBLE yet compelling.
- OBVIOUSLY the hot cop will come back for the second season, as his storyline had barely even started by the time he was shot. I'm guessing he will end up as a player, and the main guy will return as staff.
- The three main female characters were all obviously iconic. I wish the two younger females had a bit more time to flesh out their relationship further, although I guess the 30 mins they had were kind of the point of what happened.
- The slightly deranged player 212 was such a highlight, and chewed every scene she was part of :disco: INTERESTING that we didn't see her body, and out of all the main player deaths hers is the one you'd most likely survive, if the gangsta guy landed on the bottom and she landed on top. Her backstory was quite ambiguous/non-existent, so I wouldn't be at all shocked to see her return in a future instalment sort of like how Amanda did in the Saw franchise.
- I thought there were enough seeds sown for quite a substantial amount of world-building that they could elaborate on in the future. OBVIOUSLY they are going to run the franchise into the ground, but season 2 has potential to be really quite special. They hinted at other Squid Games held around the world too, Squid Games: Russia could be TERRIFYING!
- I hate the fan theory that the old man is actually the lead character's Dad. The soapiness of the show doesn't need to stretch THAT FAR!
 
Surely it can't be long until a Battle Royale mini-series is put into production? Still the BEST :disco: (the book is well worth a read too).

Apparently Netflix has similar shows in 3% and Alice In Borderland (which everybody seems to be watching after Squid Game), which obviously I will FOLLOW THE HERD and investigate.

I’ll just stick my oar in and say the lead guy in Alice in Borderland is so cute
