Did we know Taylor Swift was embroiled in a federal lawsuit claiming she breached copyright of the #81 SMASH "Players Gon Play" by 3LW by recording "Shake it Off"? :D

I think the likeness is alleged to be the lyrics "haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate" in particular.

What a MONEY GRAB

Apparently the district court judge originally granted Taylor's motion for summary judgment (i.e. throwing the case out as a matter of law) but was reversed on appeal for making a factual finding that should've been left for a jury. Taylor re-filed the same motion after some discovery and the same judge denied the motion, pretty much guaranteeing a hefty settlement or trial.

If anything, her defense of the lawsuit has increased the 3LW song's streams probably x infinity. They should be paying HER!

Is there any chance of an outcome that bans Shake It Off from being played/available anywhere?

This story is ridiculous. I saw it on the news with the full side by side lyric thing and it read like a parody. I hope she takes them to the cleaners.

Judges and juries need to be educated that we have now saturated music AND the English language when it comes to popular music. Similarities are going to occur often. You can’t just grab some dosh every time it happens

I read somewhere that the lyrics appear in many other songs dating back to the 60s. I hope if they win, those songwriters come out of the woodwork and sue THEM

I personally would love to read the legal briefing on this. The HISTORY of "Haters gonna hate" in popular music.

Yeah I’m with Funky, isn’t haters gonna hate and players gonna play been around for donkeys years in language and popular culture. I’ve certainly never matched Taylor to the dreadful 3LW track and think it’s all a bit silly given how common the words are.

Given how awful some/the main 3LW woman is I’m not surprised this is the type of shit she would get involved in to make a buck.

I don't think 3LW themselves have anything to do with this, they didn't write the song
