I was having a chat to some friends in Manchester who i’m supposed to be seeing for New Year. They were asking how I was feeling about the risk, and basically right now I can’t imagine anything being more risky than simply existing in London.

I don’t know what mask wearing is like in London atm, but it’s SHOCKING in Manchester (if this bs situation could shock me).

My sister's son has tested positive this morning.

I rang my sister in law last night to see how my brother was and ask did they need anything from the shops, my brother was in the background saying "it's no worse than a cold" but all of their family are now positive. Something she said to me was different than what she told my mum and I now think he tested positive on Christmas Day morning but they didn't bother telling my mum until Boxing Day afternoon. There was no apology for not telling me so I made a point of saying that after I'd got off the phone to my mum when I found out I rang spawn straight away so that she could adjust her lifestyle until she was sure and she was already out at a party. Still no apology or acknowledgement that it would have been a better idea to let all of us know immediately.

Basically, if none of them end up in hospital with this, my brother will take it as justification that his anti-vax nonsense is correct and the rest of us are, in fact, sheeple.

If this is his way of thinking he would have found a way to get to the same conclusion no matter what, it's not a matter of a logic anymore, it is a matter of beliefs. You can't talk them out of it unless they want out. But i understand how frustrating it can be, hope and pray they'll get this over soon, both the illness and this mentality.

I didn't watch any news today so I've just got a tweet notification from Netflix saying "together we'll go through this again" and i wondered are we back on lockdown? Well we aren't but there was a record high today and there's going to be announcements tomorrow and i really hope they do not forbid travelling again.

Am I right in saying we have HALF the amount of hospitalisations that we had this time last year in the UK?

your brother is making my blood boil, @Floppet Christmas Carol. one thing is being careless about oneself, but to be so unconcerned about the rest of you... I hope you haven't caught anything x

The worst part of it is that Covid killed my dad last April and now he may have infected my mum (who lives on her own), he's so selfish and clearly doesn't care, it's heartbreaking! From listening to Mr F, spawn and my sister it sounds like this could be a family-breaker-upper and I don't disagree with them.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's right. I think with the extended picture though, things like so many NHS staff being in isolation due to the rate of infection, travel chaos everywhere, businesses struggling to open (this happened at my work) all due to the number of people infected. That all should be considered too by the government.
I'm not suggesting any big changes, but make lateral flow tests available, actually enforce the mask wearing, suggest avoiding big functions, it all makes a difference.

Sometimes family are the worst sadly, forced relationships because they're 'blood', when actually you don't need the toxicity in your life.

Hospitalisations haven't been impacted yet by the scale of the rate increase which would start to take hold in the coming days. London has shot up already but the rest of the country is a week behind

Hopefully it will still be less and hopefully the hospitalisations will be less severe and hopefully it will continue to mean less deaths but there's a lot of people saying THE NUMBERS ARE DOWN when the numbers haven't actually happened yet. We need to wait and see what happens and hope that the maths (more cases means more impact on hospitals regardless of it being less severe) doesn't come true

Are less people testing? I'd have hoped more people would be due to visiting family and friends.

Mind you, according to comments I'm seeing in local fb groups, people are having difficulty getting tests anyway.

As in, PCR testing, which requires it to be processed at a lab.

And yes, I think there will definitely be a group of people who have chosen not to get tested (or worse, ignore a positive lateral flow) so Christmas wasn't ruined, who would normally have went for a PCR test

I wouldn't trust any numbers at the moment, Christmas means less people both testing and coming forward to be tested.
I’d have thought it was the opposite. I’ve been testing more than ever over the last two weeks. I supposed the irresponsible twats who just want to keep on partying and remain oblivious might be a bit different.

I think there will definitely be some people testing more, and some who previously didn't at all. But I sadly also don't doubt there will be some who do exactly as Zen suggests and MK confirms. As ever, covid continues to polarise.

At what point do we run out of testing capacity (it already seems touch and go in parts of the country) and they just go ‘no increase in cases, masks off everybody’. I am being hyperbolic, but it wouldn’t surprise me that much.

Well, apparently there are no PCR appointments or LFTs available at all today in England and Northern Ireland.

EXCELLENT WORK GUYS

Waiting for the penny to drop that the reason why there are so many fewer deaths is because Delta and the OG already picked off 170,000 people...

Our record was the 21k new cases from yesterday, but today there was another 28k. They aren't locking us down but now am thinking that perhaps they should have for a couple of weeks.
The new measures are ridiculous such as wearing two masks at public transportation, forbid the use of music at public places, forbid parties and forbid night clubs to operate after midnight.

It's spreading through my wider family rapidly now, we were talking just a couple of months ago how weird it is that a family (on my mums side) of about 40 adults (of 2 generations and in laws) and 7 children has had no cases. I was the first in November, now about 10 have had it. Only me and my cousin had it fairly bad back in November, like a normal flu, but everyone this month has had a cold or weird bug from it but nothing severe.

Fingers crossed it stays that way.
